The St. Louis Cardinals ended their season with a whimper and that turned much of the fan focus to the more promising minor league teams. Every level of the organization's minor league system seems to be loaded with talent and the top two teams had the chance at championship seasons.
Unfortunately, both Memphis and Springfield lost in their respective playoffs but even without a trophy, the future looks bright and arriving quickly. The major league team got a glimpse of what is to come late in the season when Chaim Bloom made the decision to promote some intriguing prospects. With the promotion of Joshua Baez and a long-term hole to fill at third base, the Cardinals have to feel good about Jesus Baez and Tai Peete showing out on a big stage.

Outfielder Tai Peete and infielder Jesus Baez each put up seasons to remember in 2026 even if the campaign did not end with them celebrating a championship. Now that all of the minor leagues have completed their seasons and prospects are getting ready to head elsewhere for the winter, outlets are beginning to announce award winners for each level of the minors. Rainiel Rodriguez was just honored by Baseball America, and now the site is celebrating the Cardinals again.
Peete has already had a year to celebrate after hitting for the cycle twice and put up the best batting average of his professional career. The 20-year-old made it to Springfield after coming over to the organization in the Brendan Donovan trade and was not overpowered by the older competition. The electric outfielder hit .319 in Double-A but found another level in the postseason. He put up a .364/.417/.682 slash line and drove in six runs before the season ended with a second-place finish.
The left-handed outfielder still has to refine his game before figuring into the major league plans, but the team opting to go with Nathan Church for the time being will allow them to be patient with the youngster. Peete will need to replicate his success through a longer time period next season but could push for an earlier promotion if he continues to demonstrate better contact and plate discipline.
Baez may have put together an even more impressive season as a whole since coming over as a major piece of the Ryan Helsley trade. After a small 27-game sample last year, Baez quickly powered his way out of Single-A after setting the franchise's home run record for Peoria. He then partnered up with Peete and the other fun talent in Springfield and found another level at the plate. By the end of the season, the infielder mashed a total of 39 homers and saw his batting average jump 70 points after moving up a level. When the playoffs arrived, Baez was playing his best baseball. He was able to outperform Peete with the bat during the postseason, putting up a 1.156 OPS and hitting two more homers.
He also did this without the massive strikeout rate of the equally powerful Joshua Baez and has been rated well on defense. Jesus spent most of his season as a shortstop but also mixed in at second and third base at each level. With the big league Cardinals stating that the long-term third base spot is open, it would not be surprising to see Baez' name entered into the competition sooner than later. Like Peete, Baez may have to start in Springfield for a bit, but with the need at the hot corner, he could push up to Memphis quickly.
