Baseball America sees Cardinals' Rainiel Rodriguez as potential best prospect in MLB

Rainiel Rodriguez is such an exciting prospect, maybe the best the St. Louis Cardinals have had in a long, long time. And now Baseball America seems to be catching up to the hype that Cardinals fans have been swimming in for quite some time.

Listed among the 11 players that Baseball America believes lived up to their spring training hype, Rodriguez received high praise from Baseball America writer Geoff Pontes, with Pontes going as far as to say that "It would not be a surprise if he’s the No. 1 prospect in the game at some point in 2027. "

Right-handed prospect Tanner Franklin also made the list for Baseball America, but Rodriguez's upside is on a whole other level, and I would make the case that he's clearly the best prospect in all of baseball as things currently stand.

Rodriguez followed up a historic 2025 debut stateside with an incredible 2026 campaign, one that saw him slash .324/.413/.591 with 27 home runs, 58 extra-base hits, and 87 RBI in just 115 games played between High-A and Double-A this season (87 of those games coming at the higher level).

Rodriguez put up numbers that very few 19-year-olds have done in Minor League history at the Double-A level, and he's done so while being a primary catcher no less. That's easily the most difficult position in baseball to learn and grow into, and he's putting up truly special offensive numbers while receiving very impressive reviews behind the plate.

Rodriguez is such a gifted hitter, and as the talent he faces increases and the pressure on him grows, he just continues to rise to the moment and exceed expectations. While the Springfield Cardinals lost the Double-A championship game last week, Rodriguez more than did his part to help secure a win, blasting an insane two-run homer to give the Cardinals the lead earlier in the game after being down 1-0.

The ball just sounds different coming off that young man's bat. He hits the baseball at optimal angles and knows how to do damage. He has great control of the strike zone at his age as well, willing to take his walks and wait for opposing pitchers to come into the zone before he swings his bat. Rodriguez has all of the makings of a superstar hitter for years to come, and the Cardinals are extremely lucky to have him in their system right now.

Yes, there are other great prospects in today's game like Jesus Made, Franklin Arias, Leo De Vries, and Josue De Paula, but what Rodriguez has been doing at such a young age and at such a high level, paired with the fact that he can catch long-term too, has to have him as the best prospect in the game in my opinion, and I know many others would agree with that as well.

Rodriguez seems to be on track to make his MLB debut next season at age 20, and the future will be very, very bright for him.
