Cardinals' Jesus Baez is doing things Cardinals fans have waited for

During the St. Louis Cardinals' 2025 trade deadline fire sale, then-president of baseball operations John Mozeliak traded the longest-tenured Cardinal at the time in Ryan Helsley for a corner infield prospect by the name of Jesus Baez. Baez, the Mets' #8 prospect and the time of the deal and subsequently the Cardinals' #6 prospect after the trade, was known primarily for his power potential and strong arm. He's become a true breakout prospect this year.

In an exclusive interview with Redbird Rants, Jesus Baez, one of the fastest-rising prospects in all of baseball, opened up about his path to the Cardinals and his future with the organization.

Baez was ranked as one of the best prospects moved at the 2025 trade deadline. When he heard about the trade, he was excited to go to a franchise like the Cardinals.

"I can't say I knew much about them other than the fact that I had several teammates growing up who were a part of the organization," said Baez through a translator. "I did realize that I was going to be traded, but I didn't know where."

Baez posted a 92 wRC+ in his first 27 games with the Cardinals following last year's trade deadline. His strikeout rate hit a career high of 23%, and he was unable to hit for power, posting a .378 slugging percentage in High-A.

In very short order, however, Jesus has made his name known amongst Cardinals fans early in his career here.

In 97 games across High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield, Baez has a .267/.312/.569 slash line with 34 home runs. Earlier this year, he set a new single-season record for home runs for the Peoria Chiefs when he hit his 14th long ball. He's managed to outdo that feat at a higher level of competition now in Double-A.

Baez has a .292 batting average and a .999 OPS across 43 games in Double-A. He's already mashed 20 home runs in that short time span, including four home runs in one day on Sunday.

"It's exciting, but this is what you work for. It's fun to see the results. That's what you're always striving for," said the young infielder. "I didn't go into this season trying to hit for power. My mindset was to hit for contact. Right before these games I had a tough one, so I came again looking to make contact."

When asked about how the Cardinals have helped Baez jump to another level, he spoke about the work he's done with the organization regarding his swing. "They've in general helped me out a ton, not getting into specifics. My swing has improved, and I think that's due to the work they've done with me."

While the Cardinals deserve credit for developing some untapped potential, Baez himself deserves a lot of credit, too. Players work diligently throughout their careers to improve, and Jesus has clearly done that this year.

Baez has primarily played shortstop in Double-A, but he's started splitting time between short and third base. Given the Cardinals' need for a third baseman in the majors, it's presumable that the 21-year-old will start seeing more time at the hot corner.

Despite having played shortstop more than any other position, Jesus is more than willing to play wherever gives him the best chance of making the majors.

"I'm very comfortable at shortstop. It's a position I've played as a kid," said Baez. "But if you told me a spot opened up in the majors, I would play there."

If Jesus Baez is able to maintain his production through the end of the year and into next year, he could debut as early as late next year.
