Group of Cardinals prospects head to the desert to refine their games for high 2027 expectations

The St. Louis Cardinals minor league system continues to impress, with the farm being ranked among the best while Springfield works towards another Double-A championship. The big league playoffs are again off the table, so the season is winding down quickly for the entire organization. While most players will take the offseason to recoup and recover, plenty of prospects will be looking to improve their game in warmer climates.

After sending eight players to the renowned Arizona Fall League last offseason, the Cardinals will match that number this year and send some high-profile names to the desert. The St. Louis prospects competed for the Glendale Desert Dogs last season, but this year they will be joining the Peoria Javelinas for the six-week season.

Cardinals send key pieces of the future to Arizona to keep progressing during the offseason

With another eight players being sent to Arizona, there is plenty to keep an eye on during the fall season. In 2025, the only Cardinals prospect who played in AFL and made it to Triple-A was catcher Graysen Tarlow, who saw a total of 10 games in Memphis since being promoted in late August. This year, however, we should expect some more familiarity behind the players playing in the extended season.

The three highest-profile names are lefty Brandon Clarke, righty Tekoah Roby, and outfielder Tai Peete, and they will be joined by plenty of their minor league teammates. Clarke will be using the two-month season to continue his progress back from a shoulder surgery that delayed the start of his season until he was recovered. Since he has returned to full health, Clarke has continued to flash the 100+ mph fastball that made the southpaw an attractive trade target at the 2025 deadline. Received in the Sonny Gray deal, Clarke has thrown just 29.2 innings and struck out a spectacular 44 hitters. The Cardinals will want to see the lefty remain healthy and work on his secondary stuff before shutting him down for the year.

Another rehabbing arm is Tekoah Roby, whom we have hoped to see in the major leagues for a couple years before multiple injuries stopped his rise up the organization's ladder. Roby has been out of action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, but has since bounced back and been closer to returning to the mound to face live hitters. His addition to the AFL list means he should be ready to step on a game mound for the first time since 2025.

Finally, the most electric of the trio heading to the Southwest is outfielder Tai Peete, another trade acquisition by Chaim Bloom. Peete has had no shortage of his own highlights this season, including hitting for the cycle twice, as well as making the reels with some showboating on his homers. After some early struggles, Peete has shown his potential and ended up hitting .296 with 13 homers, 56 RBI, and 16 stolen bases. He missed some time with nicks and bruises this year and will look to keep his momentum going against some high-octane arms from across the league.
