Springfield Cardinals' success bodes well for St. Louis's future

The St. Louis Cardinals' Double-A affiliate Springfield Cardinals won last year's Texas League Championship handily. Thanks to players like Leonardo Bernal, Brycen Mautz, Ixan Henderson, and Joshua Baez, the mighty Cardinals were able to take home the trophy with an 88-50 record. The Springfield squad this year is looking to repeat, and they have a great chance of doing so.

Springfield finished third in the first-half standings, so they came into the second half of the season needing to make up some ground. They've done just that and more.

Entering games on Saturday, August 29th, the Springfield Cardinals (37-18 in the second half) have a six-game lead over the second-place Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League North Division. The club is currently on a 10-game win streak, and they don't look like they're slowing down anytime soon.

Rainiel Rodriguez is leading the offensive charge this year with a .316/.393/.572 slash line and 19 home runs with Springfield. Jesus Baez has been the Robin to Rodriguez's Batman this year, slashing .299/.333/.679 with 21 home runs in 46 games with the Cardinals.

On the pitching side of things, Mason Molina and Liam Doyle have been leading the charge. Molina, who has been with Triple-A Memphis for a while now, posted a 2.87 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 69 innings across 14 starts for Springfield. Doyle has made 21 starts this year, posting a 3.90 ERA and striking out 121 batters in only 96 innings. After a slow start to the season, Liam Doyle has really settled into form.

Yhoiker Fajardo (2.76 ERA, 18 Ks), Tai Peete (.325/.372/.513 slash line), and now Daniel Eagan (3.38 ERA, 31 Ks) are also providing ample help for Springfield. The amount of talent at this level for the Cardinals is awesome.

The Springfield Cardinals success bodes well for the future of the St. Louis Cardinals.

For the second consecutive year, the Springfield Cardinals have a chance at winning the Texas League. Prior to games on Saturday, August 29th, the Cardinals have a six-game advantage over the Tulsa Drillers. Since the Drillers won the first-half title, Springfield only has to beat the Wichita Wind Surge.

If that happens, Springfield will play a three-game series against the Tulsa Drillers. They'll then play a series against the South Division winner in a three-game series. The victor in that series will win the Texas League.

Springfield is set up well to win the second-half North Division. They currently have a six-game lead over the Tulsa Drillers and an 11-game lead over the Wichita Wind Surge with only 14 games to go in the second half.

While minor league success doesn't necessarily lead to success in the majors down the road, it's certainly a sign of a healthy farm system. Winning in the minors also builds a culture of winning throughout the organization. Rainiel Rodriguez, Jesus Baez, Tai Peete, and Liam Doyle, among others, are all key pieces to the Cardinals future. Having them experience victories as prospects bodes well for their future major-league careers.
