The 2017 MLB Draft has come and gone, and though the St. Louis Cardinals didn’t pick until the third round, they were able to draft some impressive young talent, some of whom are playing in the College World Series beginning this weekend.

The first two players the St. Louis Cardinals selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball draft will both be playing in the 2017 College World Series beginning Saturday, June 17.

Scott Hurst

The St. Louis Cardinals’ first pick of the 2017 draft came in the third round where they selected Scott Hurst, an outfielder from Cal State Fullerton. Hurst, a junior, is the starting center fielder for the Titans.

Fullerton (39-22) opens play in Omaha against top-ranked Oregon State (54-4) at 2 pm CST on Saturday. Cardinals fans eager to see Hurst play can tune in on ESPN.

During the 2017 season, Hurst hit .332/.424/.585 with twelve home runs, fifteen doubles, and five triples. Along with his production at the plate, Hurst possesses above-average defense and base running abilities at the college level.

Kramer Robertson

The St. Louis Cardinals’ second overall pick of the 2017 draft came in the fourth round, where they picked Louisiana State shortstop Kramer Robertson. Drafted in the 32nd round a year ago by the Cleveland Indians, Robertson returned to LSU in 2017 for his senior year.

The Tigers shortstop hit .319/.421/.504 with eight home runs, eighteen doubles, and three triples this season. He was an All-American and All-SEC shortstop his junior year.

LSU (48-17) plays the second of two games Saturday, at 7 pm CST against Florida State. ESPN will also televise that game.

Robertson’s defense at shortstop is perhaps his strongest asset, and Cardinals fans figure to get a good look at his prowess as the Tigers prepare to make a deep World Series run.

Other Picks

Other selections from the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2017 draft class participating in the College World Series include 33rd-round pick Taylor Bryant, a second baseman from Cal State Fullerton and 38th-round pick Jim Voyles, a right-handed pitcher from Florida State.
