Tony La Russa addresses Cardinals hacking

Well, it would stand to reason someone would look at Tony La Russa.

After all, the former St. Louis Cardinals manager is friends with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, so it must be guilt by association, right?

La Russa knew the questions would come, so when he was in the St. Louis area for a charity golf outing he had a chance to speak with St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Kevin Modelski about the incident that has many Cardinal haters pointing fingers and laughing.

“I know what the organization represents,” La Russa said. “Whatever it is that was done wrong, it was done at a very low level, if it was done wrong. I guarantee you the organization is not tarnished at all.”

La Russa, who was in attendance for the Albert Pujols charity golf outing in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin, believes the incident started with low-level personnel wanting to have fun and not at the top with high-profile personnel like general manager John Mozeliak or owner Bill DeWitt Jr.

No one knows what really happened yet, except that the FBI investigation is ongoing.

No one honestly believes La Russa was involved. I stick with my guns and say, like La Russa and other higher-ups, that someone with access to former Cardinals exec and current Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow’s passwords wanted to simply have some fun.

The problem is it’s sullied the reputation, if only a little bit, of the team with the best record in Major League Baseball.

La Russa also addressed the renaissance of former first baseman Albert Pujols, who was the Cardinals cornerstone from 2001 to 2011. Pujols has 23 homers this year, and La Russa said “He’s the Albert we saw here for 11 years.”
