Are The St. Louis Cardinals Going After Cole Hamels?

Anything is possible. Even Cole Hamels getting traded to the St. Louis Cardinals is possible.

According to Jim Duquette of MLB.com:

"With one of the game’s best rotations year in and year out, the Cardinals’ recipe for winning has been to maintain a top-notch staff. After trading Shelby Miller to Atlanta, while wondering if Michael Wacha can return to form, GM John Mozeliak made it clear he wants another high-end arm with his interest in Jon Lester. Getting Hamels would satisfy that desire.A trade package starting with right-hander Carlos Martinez and left-hander Marco Gonzalez or outfielder Randal Grichuk would be hard to part with, but adding Hamels would also help the Cardinals maintain their elite rotation."

Either of those three as trade chips seems highly unlikely. Highly Unlikely. But, the Cardinals have loads of options. They have the need for another high-caliber pitcher. Pitching depth is very important as we saw last season. That said. The Cardinals seem to not want to fork over a lot of cash … see: We don’t have Max Scherzer or James Shields.

Hamels seems like a nice fit. He would give the staff additional depth. Like most Cardinals pitchers, he isn’t flashy and goes about his business by just getting it done. In nine seasons, he has a career record of 108-83, with an ERA of 3.27 in 274 games started. He has 13 complete games. He averages over 200 innings a season (Remember those innings issues last season. Do you?!). He averages over 200 strikeouts a season, and has 1,707 strikeouts in his career.

He is what you all would call pretty good. And he doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

I think he would be a nice get for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, John Lackey, Michael Wacha and Cole Hamels? Woah! We shall see though!
