Adam Wainwright will start the Cardinals Home Opener! Following a rainout from Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny decided to push each starter back one game.
In a story reported earlier by Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, the rotation will now feature Lance Lynn, who is on the mound today, followed by John Lackey, Michael Wacha and Carlos Martinez who will all be pitching in the Cardinals weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds.
By starting the Season Opener and Home opener for the Redbirds, Wainwright will be doing something that has not been done by the team since 1989. For those of you that are wondering, the last St Louis Cardinals pitcher to draw that assignment was Joe Magrane.
With Mike Matheny making the adjustment to the rotation it allows guys to fall on full rest including Carlos Martinez, who pitched an inning of scoreless relief against the Chicago Cubs in the opener. This could also keep the club relatively sharp while providing Martinez a window to get back on a routine accustom to a starter during the grueling regular season. “We want to stay with him,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday. “We like how he’s been throwing, too. It would be a shame not to use him and meanwhile we’re gaining time for some of the other guys.”
Lance Lynn was originally slotted in as the starter to pitch the home opener of 2015, but now the club’s ace will be taking on that task for the fourth time in his career. For his career in home openers, Adam Wainwright has a 1-1 record with an alarming 5.51 era.
Don’t be concerned Cardinals fans, since entering the Starting rotation in 2007, he has a career home record of 61-34 combined at both Busch Stadium II and Busch Stadium III.

It is a pure spectacle that everyone can be a part of with many Cardinals legends being honored and taking part in the festivities along with the legendary Clydesdales. What is not to love about that?
