Jon Heyman thinks St. Louis Cardinals might aim for Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer is from the St. Louis area so it’s no surprise that CBS Sports baseball writer and MLB Network insider Jon Heyman writes that the St. Louis Cardinals should make a run at the free agent pitcher.

More from St Louis Cardinals Rumors

We know that the Cardinals are not one of those teams involved in pursuing free agent Jon Lester but the idea of signing the former American League Cy Young Award winner is not something that appears to be out of the blue. The only thing is where would Scherzer fit in the Cardinals already crowded rotation.

Heyman writes:

"The Cardinals met at some point on Scherzer, and word is that at least a couple of Cardinals players or former players have called Scherzer to make a pitch about the team. Scherzer, as a product of suburban Chesterfield, Mo., Parkway Central and the University of Missouri, obviously is already familiar with the town."

The pitcher turned down a $144 million contract extension this season with the Detroit Tigers. Unless he were to offer the Cardinals a hometown discount as players like Jim Edmonds have done in the past, it would cost a high price to sign him.

General manager John Mozeliak has a policy of not commenting on free agents but that doesn’t appear to have stopped current and former players to recruit the guy.
