Rockies star Hunter Goodman refutes umpire's story about Cardinals hat tilt controversy

Following last night's ridiculous events that stemmed from home plate umpire Doug Eddings’ unprofessional handling of multiple calls and moments in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies, Eddings placed the blame on Rockies' catcher Hunter Goodman for telling Cardinals rookie Hancel Rincon to fix his hat. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Goodman told Denver reporters, "directly, succinctly he did not bring up the hat tilt. He was clear and direct on this."

This story just keeps adding layers to it.

Umpire Doug Eddings not taking accountability for actions against the Cardinals is ridiculous.

Eddings spoke to two reporters following last night's game and took zero accountability for his actions, instead deflecting the incident onto Goodman requesting it, and then saying the Cardinals only made it a big deal because Rincon was struggling on the mound.

The entire baseball world has been dumbfounded by Eddings' conduct since last night, and we broke down the entire debacle following the game last night over on Dealin' the Cards, detailing each invidual situation that led to one of the worst showings by an umpire I can remember. And now that his story isn't lining up with Goodman's, it's an even worse look for Eddings.

So far there has been no comment from Major League Baseball on the situation, nor has there been any indication that Eddings will be disciplined for the conduct. He intentionally showed by a rookie (Rincon), Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol (and threw him out of the game), veteran reliever Justin Bruihl by giving him the ridiculous pitch clock violation, and the whole Cardinals team when he missed a call at the plate moments later, which happened right in front of him.

You know something is bad when Cardinals' broadcaster Brad Thompson gets amped up about it, which he did during the series of events last night, and so many other players, media, and fans have expressed similar thoughts as well.

The Cardinals ended up winning the game after a clutch three-run homer from Ivan Herrera in the top of the ninth inning, but things looked bad after that blow-up inning flipped the game and gave the Rockies the lead. While the Cardinals are not favorites to make the postseason by any means, this series was critical for them in their quest to do so, especially as the other teams in the race face difficult opponents this weekend.

Hopefully the Cardinals bring the energy again tonight as they look to claw their way back in the Wild Card race.
