Cardinals manager Oli Marmol rips umpire Doug Eddings in postgame interview

During Friday night's game, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol was ejected by home plate umpire Doug Eddings. Eddings took issue with how Cardinals' reliever and rookie Hancel Rincon was wearing his hat. Marmol came out to defend his rookie pitcher, and Eddings ejected Oli as a result. Eddings then called a pitch clock violation on Rincon's replacement Justin Bruihl.

Marmol even shifted his hat slightly as he was coming out of the dugout to call attention to Eddings's foolishness.

This was just Oli's fourth ejection of the season, but it was the 25th of his career. While he's certainly had his run-ins with umpires in the past, this one might just take the cake, especially when you take his postgame interview into account. Even the Cardinals' broadcast duo of Chip Caray and Brad Thompson were livid.

In the postgame interview with Chip Caray, Oli Marmol addressed this issue, and he had some strong words to home plate umpire Doug Eddings.

Chip Caray asked Oli Marmol to break down the events of the sixth inning after the game, and Oli didn't mince words.

"Some words (were) exchanged there. Quite honestly, I thought it was pretty embarrassing on (Eddings's) end," said Marmol bluntly to kick off the interview. "We have a kid making his debut, and in between an at bat he tells him he needs to fix his hat and 'the kid's not going to wear his hat like that on my field.'

"Last I checked this is Coors Field, so I took issue with it," said Oli.

Marmol was clearly still fired up due to Eddings's poor showing at Coors Field, and his tongue-in-cheek remark about it being Coors Field rather than Doug Eddings's field is proof of that.

Oli also went on to describe the foolishness of the pitch clock violation. "And then the pitch violation while I'm out there having a discussion, that's also stupid in my opinion, so there's a lot of moving parts to that one," said Oli in frustration. "At the end of the day, I thought they handled it poorly, and I'd like an explanation at some point."

In the seventh inning, Eddings also missed a play at home plate in which Justin Bruihl flipped the ball to home and easily threw out Troy Johnston. Eddings, however, ruled Johnston safe at home. The Cardinals were also out of challenges, so the call of the field had to stand. This was just another in a long line of faults by Doug Eddings tonight.

Lucky for the Cardinals, designated hitter Ivan Herrera slugged a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Cardinals a 7-6 lead. Despite getting into Colorado at 5:00 A.M. earlier today. Chip Caray's call after Riley O'Brien's final pitch of the night was exceptional, and it summed up the entire night: "(The Cardinals) were Doug a hole, but it's a happy Eddings."

The Cardinals have two more games against the Rockies, and Doug Eddings will be somewhere on the field. His pre-game hand shake with Oli Marmol will be something to keep an eye on.
