Cardinals broadcast destroys umpire over blatant missed calls, Oli Marmol ejection

I've literally never heard St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster raise his voice in anger in my years listening to him commentate on Cardinals games, but multiple blown calls and the attitude of umpire Doug Eddings had Thompson losing his mind during the bottom of the sixth inning of the Cardinals contest with the Colorado Rockies.

Starting with Thompson's frustration and working our way backwards, after a blown call where Eddings used major attitude when annoucing the decision on the Cardinals failed review of said call, a terrible decision to call a pick clock violation after arguing with manager Oliver Mamrol, and then ejecting Marmol shortly after, Eddings missed a clear out call at home plate that happened right in front of him, leading Thompson to say this on the broadcast:

"He definitely got that left hand," Cardinals broadcaster Brad Thompson explained. Then, which is very unlike him, Thompson began yelling on the broadcast, "How do you miss that? From where you're sitting, where do you, how do you miss that? If you're Doug Eddings behind the plate. It almost looked like you want to miss that! From right there!"

The audio of that quote can be found below from Redbird Rants contributor Thomas Gauvain on X. I'm telling you, I've never heard Thompson like that before.

Now, I want to walk through the entire sixth-inning sequence and how horrible all of that was. The Cardinals were winning 4-1 entering that inning and ended it down 6-4. This is a huge game for the Cardinals, and they cannot afford to lose it.

Umpire Doug Eddings errates Cardinals broadcasters and dugout with terrible calls

It all started with a safe call at third base earlier in the inning, where the ball popped out of Nolan Gorman's glove after he tagged out the runner, but the ball came out when his glove hit the ground and after the runner's momentum slammed into his glove.

This led innings to announce the decision, with a clear tone in his voice, so much so that both Thompson and Chip Caray acknowledged it. And remember, this is before everything else that happened.

Apparently, Eddings had a problem with how Rincon was wearing his hat, began to have a conversation with catcher Leo Bernal about it, and prompted Marmol to come out and talk to him. They got into a heated discussion; Marmol went back to the dugout, and as he did, Eddings called a pitch clock violation on Rincon for that.

Marmol and the Cardinals dugout was livid, and Marmol was then ejected by Eddings for that.

You can even see Marmol shift his hat slightly like Rincon, calling attention to how absurd all of this was.

And then, after all of that, Eddings blew this call at the plate that was so clearly out right in front of him, leading to Thompson's reaction on the broadcast.

Even Chip Caray aired out his frustrations, talking about how "sometimes umpires think it's their field and their game; it's not. They're the officials; they're in charge, but it's the players' game."

Thompson and Caray both went off about the hat situation, beyond themselves that it happened, and even called for the league to look into it.

Just a ridiculous sequence that should never happen in a professional baseball game.
