The St. Louis Cardinals missed the postseason yet again this year but the future has somehow never looked brighter. After an entire season of building up the minor league system, the fans are not the only ones ready to see who is on their way to make an impact in St. Louis.
While the major league team still has some work to do, most of the Cardinals' under level teams took big steps towards contributing to the future. The Springfield Cardinals (now Ozark Springbirds) made it to the Double-A championship for the second consecutive season but fell just short of back-to-back titles. In Memphis, the Triple-A Redbirds made the playoffs even after graduating multiple contributors to the major leagues and still have plenty of talent ready and waiting for their call.
Cardinals minor league system is full of prospects who can make a big league impact soon
I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with lefty pitching prospect Michael Watson recently and he could not help but talk up the entire roster. After going undrafted in 2024, Watson was signed by the Cardinals after a short stint in the independent American Association and made his way up to Double-A last season. This year, he stayed in Springfield all season and had the opportunity to play on one of the most talented rosters in all of minor league baseball.
According to Watson, the Cardinals Double-A roster is full of "dogs" who want to compete and want nothing more than to win. After Watson steamrolled through three levels in his first season, he settled into his role in Springfield with the goal of repeating as champions. With a lineup that seemingly hit five homers a game and a pitching staff that could strike out the world, Springfield looked like a true juggernaut in the minors.

With a season like this group put together in Springfield, it's hard to argue against that

Further in the interview, he continues on to state how the organization having success in the minor leagues points to the big league team benefitting in the near future. Watson mentions how Palm Beach, Springfield, and Memphis have all had postseason experience and most of the guys on those teams have played together at the next level. With the Cardinals focusing on their long-term future instead of short-term gains, chances are these guys will have the opportunity to bring the major league team back to the playoffs as Chaim Bloom looks to add to the organization rather than take away from the future.
While fans still wait for Chaim Bloom to add that next superstar to the major league roster, it looks like we can allow ourselves to buy into the fact the future is bright. I try to keep myself on level ground when buying into prospect hype, but when someone who plays with these guys everyday cannot help themselves from being excited, I think it is fair to jump on the wagon. There is still plenty of risk associated with investing into prospects as your team's future, but with the way Bloom and the Cardinals organization have focused on this aspect, the optimism for the St. Louis Cardinals is understandable.
