The long-awaited name change for the St. Louis Cardinals Double-A affiliate, formerly the Springfield Cardinals, became official on Tuesday evening. Following a promo by St. Louis and Springfield Cardinals legend Matt Carpenter and an in-person appearance by Matt Adams, the Texas League runners-up unveiled their new team name: the Ozarks Springbirds.

This official rebrand comes with new on-field jerseys and caps, as well as a fresh logo and a color swap.

“We are extremely excited to launch our new brand identity today,” Springbirds General Manager Dan Reiter said of the rebrand. “Our new name and logos were created with three things in mind: our city, our region, and our birds to create something we can all be proud to call our own. We can’t wait to see the Springbirds take the field in 2027.”

This name pays homage to several parts of Southwest Missouri. "Birds" maintains the organization's connection to the Cardinals. "Spring" is a double entendre for both Springfield, the team's city, and how the team is a springboard for the rest of the organization. Lastly, "Ozarks" is a clear reference to the entire surrounding area.

Ozarks' official announcement online states that, "With a focus on uniting all of Southwest Missouri, the Ozarks Springbirds will debut on April 2, 2027 at Route 66 Stadium in Downtown Springfield. This new identity pays homage to the city of Springfield, the gorgeous Ozarks landscape and the strength of Cardinals Nation."

The Ozarks Springbirds rebrand leaves much to be desired for the St. Louis Cardinals' Double-A affiliate.

For starters, the name doesn't roll off the tongue very well. While "Ozark Springbirds" would flow better, Ozark is a township in the area. The organization clearly wanted to connect to the larger area/

While the color change and font refresh is slick, it's difficult to get past the new name. It feels like the organization played it safe with this name while also leaning too hard into too many aspects of the surrounding area.

Personally, I would have preferred the organization go a little more bold with their rebrand. I posed the "Queen City Cashews" as an option when the rebrand was initially announced. Springfield's nickname is Queen City given its placement as the main commercial and cultural center of the Ozark region.

Cashew Chicken also has deep roots in the area.

Springfield is the birthplace of Springfield-style cashew chicken. In 1963, Chinese-American chef David Leong opened Leong's Tea House in Springfield to help introduce Chinese foods to locals who were largely unfamiliar with the delicacy. His recipe, one that included Chinese-inspired sauce, green onions, and cashews, became a hit.

The Springbirds' season kicks off on April 2, 2027. Fans in and around the area will surely flock to the stadium due to the cadre of young talent in the organization. They might, however, be disappointed in the new team name. Lucky for the fans, they'll get to see some top-rated prospects like Jacob Odle, Yordalin Pena, and Yairo Padilla among others next year.
