The St. Louis Cardinals are going to need reinforcements. With the Giants throwing in the towel for the season, the team needs to go after their closer.

With the trade deadline coming up in less than two weeks, the St. Louis Cardinals will need to decide if they will approach the deadline as buyers or sellers. Even though the first half of the season has been a massive disappointment as they are hovering at the .500 mark, they are still only a couple games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs. If they are going to try and take the division, they are going to need reinforcements.

Things are not looking good at all for the San Francisco Giants, and this might be the year that they decide it is time to tear down the team that was once a dynasty. Their ace, Madison Bumgarner is one of the hottest commodities on the market, but they also have another very solid arm that they could deal in lefty reliever Will Smith. No, not the actor Will Smith if that was what you wondering.

Over the offseason, the Cardinals and Giants discussed a deal for Smith, but a deal was not stricken, and the Cardinals decided to use the free-agent market to find their reliever in Andrew Miller who has found his place in St. Louis after a very rocky start. The Cardinals will need another quality lefty arm in the bullpen, and Tyler Webb and Chasen Shreve will not get the job done.

Smith has been spectacular so far this season for San Francisco and has easily been their best arm in the bullpen. Smith is currently sporting an astonishing 2.17 ERA to go with a 0.80 WHIP and even earned his first career All-Star game bid due to his efforts. Though he has been very solid throughout his career, the 30-year-old is currently enjoying a career-best season, with career highs in almost every statistic. Smith could also close out games for St. Louis, as he is currently the closer for the Giants and has 23 saves on the season, which is good for 2nd in the National League at the moment.

Since Will Smith will be hitting the free agent market this offseason, he will be just a rental for St. Louis, and that also means he will not cost too much to acquire. Since San Francisco is very likely about to start a heavy rebuild, they will probably be seeking prospects as a return.

I believe that the Cardinals could end up trading No. 7 prospect Genesis Cabrera and No. 8 prospect Lane Thomas in exchange for Smith’s services, and honestly for how good Smith is, I would do that any day of the week. I would also like for St. Louis to resign him after this offseason and have a dominant left side of the bullpen in Andrew Miller and Will Smith.
