Fresh off of a two-year extension, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol is already making headlines with quotes.

The St. Louis Cardinals are entering the 2026 season without your traditional veteran leader on the team. Gone are the days of All-Stars like Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Brendan Donovan, and Willson Contreras. The most experienced player on the team based on service time is Ryne Stanek, with just over eight years of service time.

Only Stanek, Dustin May (six years), JoJo Romero (five years), and Ramon Urias (five years) have logged more than five years of service time in their careers. 22 of the 26 players on the Opening Day roster will still be in arbitration or pre-arbitration.

Leadership, at least in the traditional sense, is scarce. That leaves it up to the coaching staff and long-time Cardinals to step up and lead the team, and manager Oliver Marmol believes this young crop of players is now ready to step up to the challenge.

After several years in waiting, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol believes the young players are now ready to lead the clubhouse.

Several young players are already stepping up as leaders for the Cardinals, and manager Oliver Marmol doesn't believe that is a coincidence.

In a recent interview with Foul Territory, Marmol was asked by Erik Kratz how he views the team's leadership heading into a pivotal 2026 season. Marmol's response was taken out of context by several people on social media.

"If you would've removed the veterans last year and had this group, I would've said no (there aren't enough veterans). I don't think some of these guys were ready to take that next step and be ready to hold a clubhouse and hold people accountable...I do feel much better about where that group is at, and I think by not having that big name, big voice that everyone looks to for everything in the clubhouse, it allows each and every one of them to step into that role...I like the mix now. A year ago, absolutely not, but I feel really good."

Marmol's quote was taken by many as a dig at last year's veteran leadership in Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Sonny Gray. Clearly, that's not the case. What Oli is saying is that this current group of leaders wasn't ready last year. Now, after more seasoning and a void in the clubhouse, the young players on the roster are ready to take the reins of leadership.

Now, without the pressure of needing to make the playoffs or the presence of future Hall of Famers, several young players are ready to step up and lead the Cardinals. Lars Nootbaar, Alec Burleson, Masyn Winn, Matthew Liberatore, and Michael McGreevy appear ready to take the next step both on the field and in the clubhouse.

The 2026 Cardinals will be different from any team we've seen in recent years. Gone are the days of being perennial contenders with several big-name players on the roster. Now, with the future being more important than the present, young players will have to step up and take control of the clubhouse.

2026 is the year for the Cardinals to build a new identity. With Oliver Marmol locked in as manager and a fresh crop of young players rising to the challenge, that identity could be formed very quickly.
