Former Cardinals hurler Miles Mikolas gets the axe in what may be the final stop of his MLB career

Miles Mikolas may have thrown his last pitch in Major Leauge Baseball. The former St. Louis Cardinals hurler was just designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals, according to The Athletics' Spencer Nusbaum.

The Nationals signed veteran pitcher and former Cardinals innings eater Miles Mikolas to a one-year contract. Mikolas, 37, agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million, but it's looking like it may be the end of Mikolas's run in our nation's capital.

Last night, Washington was set to promote Jackson Kent, and Kent will start for the Nationals on Wednesday, with Mikolas seemingly being the odd man out. "Though there is no official corresponding move tonight, Miles Mikolas was saying goodbye to teammates in the clubhouse," according to Nusbaum's Twitter/X page.

Following a loss to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, the Nationals sit at 59-62, and they're edging themselves out of the Wild Card race. The team is now aiming to continue a youth movement that's being led by shortstop CJ Abrams and outfielder James Wood. Unfortunately for Mikolas, he's a casualty of this movement.

The Washington Nationals have cut ties with former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas.

Mikolas has appeared in 24 games this year, 11 of which he's started. In mid-May, the Nationals started using an opener in Mikolas's games to help alleviate some first-inning pressure for him. This didn't seem to do much for Mikolas, as his ERA in July and August were 6.62 and 8.18, respectively.

On the year, Mikolas has a 3-9 record and a 5.89 ERA across 113 innings. He's struck out only 56 batters while giving up 26 home runs. In his most recent outing, Mikolas threw three innings in relief against Chicago. He allowed just one run, and it felt all along like the Nationals were using him to eat innings in a game they were going to lose all along. It's been a rough year for the veteran righty, and it's logical that the Nationals are cutting him loose.

With the Nationals promoting Jackson Kent, Miles Mikolas's time in Washington, which was already being borrowed on his end, is coming to an end.

Miles Mikolas spent seven years with the Cardinals. He was an All-Star in both 2018 and 2022. He finished his time with st. Louis with a 68-69 record and a 4.16 ERA. His career with the Cardinals is best remembered by his falling production in the final three years.

Mikolas recently achieved a decade of service time in Major League Baseball. The Nationals deserve recognition and respect for allowing Mikolas to reach this very important career mark for professional ballplayers. Miles got a special belt buckle in honor of reaching this milestone.

Given the fact that he's 37 and in his fourth year of decline, it's unlikely that another team picks up Miles Mikolas. He's worked hard to find success in the majors, having spent time in Korea to reinvent himself. Regardless, it's impressive that he's been in the league as long as he has, and Mikolas was a vital pitcher for St. Louis during the late 2010s and early 2020s.
