Heading into the 2026 season, MLB Pipeline had the St. Louis Cardinals farm system ranked as the fourth-best in all of baseball. So, after adding even more talent to their prospect pool, surely the Cardinals have moved up that list? Nope. Their ranking remains unchanged.
According to Pipeline, the Cardinals once again are checking in as the fourth-best farm system in the game. That is a strong ranking and nothing to scoff at, but when they explain the reasoning, it feels odd that they wouldn't have the Cardinals ranked even higher.
"It may look like the Cardinals are holding serve here...but there’s a good case to be made that the farm is actually better stocked than it was in preseason," wrote Pipeline's team. They noted how the Cardinals added immense talent at the trade deadline and had the deepest draft class in the 2026 MLB Draft, and yet, no gains in the rankings.
Rankings are rankings, but it's still a weird situation. The Dodgers and Brewers, who rank first and third respectively in this updated ranking, both gave up significant prospect capital at the trade deadline and didn't receive nearly the praise that the Cardinals did for their draft. And yet, both teams remained ahead of St. Louis.
Regardless, it's clear that the Cardinals have a top farm system in the game, and it may continue to grow in its respect as the year goes on.
The Cardinals clearly have a top five farm system in all of baseball
The Cardinals boast exciting young talent up and down their farm system. Whether it's their starting pitching, relief arms, infield bats, outfield options, or extreme depth at the catcher position, their top 30 prospects list is absolutely loaded, and they have many more names outside of that as well.
Baseball America recently ranked the Cardinals' farm system as second-best in the sport, a ranking that seems more fair to the work they've put into acquiring and developing talent. And honestly, in a few months, they could be the unanimous best system in the sport.
Even if they don't get the ultimate respect from MLB Pipeline in this case, their staff was very clear that they believe this system is loaded, and it is. Cardinals fans got their first look at Joshua Baez this weekend, and soon they'll be seeing even more exciting young names. It's an incredible farm system, and the Cardinals deserve a ton of credit for turning it around.
