Tai Peete couldn't add a second Home Run Derby championship to the St. Louis Cardinals' trophy case tonight during the Arizona Fall League Derby, but he did put on quite the show in what has been an incredible AFL showing for him thus far.
Peete, whom the Cardinals acquired from the Seattle Mariners in the Brendan Donvoan, made it all the way to the final before running out of gas, hitting just one home run in the championship round, falling short to AFL Derby champ Aaron Parker (Blue Jays prospect, on the Mesa Solar Sox roster).
It was a really fun story seeing Peete's father throw to his son all night long, and while we all would have loved to have seen Peete win it all, his performance in the AFL and with the Cardinals as a whole this year is what fans should be excited about.

Tai Peete has put his name on the map for the Cardinals during the Arizona Fall League
Peete has a strong case to win AFL MVP, slashing .351/.438/.676 with three home runs, five triples, five doubles, and 17 RBI in just 18 games played. His 1.114 OPS is second in the league to Welbyn Francisca, who is probably his strongest competition as things currently stand.
Peete is in the Arizona Fall League after missing a good bit of time this year, but when he was healthy, he was on fire for St. Louis. Between High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield, Peete slashed .296/.359/.549 with 13 home runs and 56 RBI in just 66 games, and he's primed to make a run for the Cardinals' center field gig by the end of the 2027 season.
We recently interviewed Peete on the Dealin' the Cards podcast, and his personality is 80-grade. He's someone that Cardinals fans will easily fall in love with as they get to know him, and when you pair that with an exciting brand of baseball that he plays, it's easy to see why the Cardinals are so high on Peete.
We interviewed Cardinals farm director Larry Day the very next day on the podcast, and he spoke so highly of Peete's character and work ethic. Any time you talk to someone with the Cardinals, they rave about Peete, and his AFL performance is only adding fuel to that fire.
Peete is the 10th-ranked prospect in the Cardinals system, according to Baseball America, but with how he's played lately and the rave reviews he's gotten from that outlet as well, I'm sure he'll be closer to their top five when they debut their top 10 prospects for the Cardinals system in 2027 here soon.
If you look at the Cardinals Major League roster, only third base and center field feel truly wide open right now, but Peete has as good a case as anyone to take that job and run with it in the next 365 days. He has all of the tools in the world to be an impact player in all phases of the game, and we'll see if he's able to put up some more highlights in the AFL postseason before he completes his 2026 campaign.
