Cardinals minor league affiliate trolls controversial umpire by offering hilarious giveaway

The St. Louis Cardinals' Double-A affiliate clearly has its finger on the pulse of the recent happenings around the major leagues. A ridiculous brouhaha took place on Sept. 4 in St. Louis' game against the Colorado Rockies when umpire Doug Eddings reportedly ordered pitcher Hancel Rincón to fix the angle of his hat, and Springfield, one of Rincón's old haunts, has cleverly capitalized on the notoriety of the incident.

It was a rough introduction to the show for Rincón in his major league debut, as he allowed three earned runs while recording just one out in the Cardinals' wild win over the Rockies after Eddings' nonsensical order for him to adjust his cap. According to Cardinals manager Oli Marmol, Eddings' decision was a "power-hungry move," and Eddings rubbed salt into the wound later in the inning, as he blew a call at the plate, allowing the Rockies to score a run.

Had St. Louis failed to come back from the two-run deficit entering the ninth inning, the mood around Cardinals Nation would undoubtedly be much sourer. But as it stands, Springfield's promotional team just had a stroke of brilliance with this latest event.

The Springfield Cardinals look ready to dominate

Springfield fans are familiar with Rincón, who started eight games for the team in 2025 and held an ERA of 3.61, and he continued his breakout after shifting to the bullpen with Triple-A Memphis in 2026. Although Rincón no longer graces Route 66 Stadium in Springfield, the Double-A squad hasn't missed a beat, as it continues to be the major beneficiary of Chaim Bloom's sell-offs as the organization's president of baseball operations.

The Springfield Cardinals, who will soon take on a different nickname, are littered with tomorrow's stars. Rainiel Rodriguez, Liam Doyle, Tanner Frankin, Yhoiker Fajardo, Tai Peete and Jesús Báez are a few of the names that grace Springfield's lineup and rotation and from whom St. Louis fans are expecting big contributions in the future.

Springfield has already clinched a playoff berth, as their 41-20 record in the second half of the season was the best in the Texas League and allows them to qualify for the postseason based on the Double-A playoff rules. Springfield will look to grab back-to-back Texas League titles, and their loaded roaster should provide more than enough firepower to allow them to pull off the feat.
