Vibes are high in St. Louis after the Cardinals ripped victory from the jaws of defeat, bringing home a 10-9 win and taking their fifth series in a row.
The Cardinals had an up-and-down series in Cincinnati and will surely have to play better baseball to put together wins against the upcoming Philadelphia Phillies. That being said, the aura around Redbird baseball is different this season. And none other than manager Oliver Marmol attests to that claim.
Cardinal manager Oli Marmol “looks happier than ever” this season
During his routine appearance on KMOX, a fan on YouTube pointed something out about the skipper’s temperament.
Fans said Marmol looks happier, and when asked about it, he wasn’t shy to admit it was true.
“It’s not close,” Marmol replied. “There’s a clear direction as to how we’re gonna get to where we’re all having a good time. We’re all showing up to the park, and we’re really taking a shot at making a deep run at the playoffs.
“With that clear direction comes some freedom of just developing these guys, and knowing what the goal is every day. I’m having an incredible time managing these guys. It’s a fun group. In that clubhouse, before the game, after games, after a tough loss, like, they’re doing it well. It makes 162 [games] a heck of a lot more fun.
“So, I’m enjoying it more than ever. I know our staff is, and I know our players are.”
Marmol has long been criticized as the Cardinal manager and has led the team to a cumulative record of 390-386, not a substantial achievement by anyone’s standards.
However, his comments are just as revealing of the organization as they are to the inner world of Marmol.
Let’s take a peek behind the Cardinals curtain.
What does Oliver Marmol mean by what he said about the Cardinals?
Although this is pure speculation, it seems more than fair to infer that Marmol’s newfound smile correlates with the restructured Cardinals front office.
POBO Chaim Bloom and the rest of his wrecking crew came in and demolished the old setup. Now, the new boys are cookin’, and smiles are commonplace.
Ahead of the trade deadline, Cardinal shortstop Masyn Winn made a revealing comment about Bloom’s trade aspirations, prompting a frenzy from Cardinals fans.
At that time, many people wondered if Bloom simply said to the team, "No matter what, we’re making deals."
That sure seemed to be the overarching vibe, and sure enough, the Cardinals sold.
Now, the seemingly always-dialed Marmol is busting a gut in the dugout and enjoying himself like it's 1989. (The Berlin Wall came down. Hooray!)
This feels different. The Cardinals finally seem to have everyone on the same page, and through a flurry of quotes, actions, and on-field decisions, that cohesive plan has been displayed right in front of our eyes.
Marmol is happy because his job finally has a purpose: to prepare the Cardinals for their next World Series. And you should be happy, too.
