Cardinals make a statement in support of slanted-hat rookie Hancel Rincon

The St. Louis Cardinals had an eventful start to their series against the Colorado Rockies. Most of the commotion centered on umpire Doug Eddings and his saga of misplaced anger. 

Eddings, who has a history of interesting calls, started his personal fireworks show with an emphatic announcement on a failed Cardinal challenge. 

Afterwards, Eddings continued his Cardinal sins by absolutely blowing a call on a play at the plate. At the time, it gave Colorado a 1-0 lead. 

Somewhere along the line, Eddings barked at the Cardinals’ rookie Hancel Rincon to fix his hat. 

Rincon was in the midst of his MLB debut and opted to sport his cap tilted to the side, Fernando Rodney style. 

Eddings took exception, which sparked outrage from Cardinals’ skipper Oliver Marmol and the rest of the Redbirds–deservedly so. 

Marmol came out to speak his mind to Eddings and was tossed shortly after. Lots of not-so-PG words were exchanged, and according to the court of public opinion, as well as common sense, the Cardinal grievances are well placed. 

Most of this story leaves a sour taste in your mouth. A rookie, climbing the minor-league ladder to make his dreams a reality–all for the personal aesthetic preferences of a glorified observer to overshadow his achievement. Yet, the Cardiac Cards did what they do best, and they thrived within the eye of the storm. 

The Cardinals made a statement with slanted caps ahead of game two in Colorado 

Ahead of the game, the Cardinals’ dugout buzzed with intense energy as they awaited a potential series-deciding game.

The only other thing it was full of? Slanted caps. 

The Cardinals’ broadcast noted that the Colorado Rockies also had players sporting the new look. Happenstance? Maybe, but it’s more fun to dream on a united front. 

Furthermore, St. Louis has debuted a new “slanted cap celebration.” 

Bryan Torres showed off the physical quip when he reached base, and Ivan Herrera put an exclamation mark on it by hitting a two-run shot to dead-center field and following it up with a slanted-helmet celly of his own. 

To Eddings’ credit, he seemingly met with the rookie Rincon ahead of the game and apologized. The internet has dragged this poor man through dirt, grime, and slime since his old-school mistake, and at the very least, he’s attempting to atone. 

The Cardinals don’t look like a playoff team. They might not even finish at .500. One thing they do have, though, is swag. 

Slanted hats, the crack of the bat, and a team-led statement have the Redbirds flying high. The win column is nice, but family is better.
