Cardinals Double-A roster could help ease the pain for the remainder of the 2026 season

Chaim Bloom and the rest of the front office staff are more focused on the future of the St. Louis Cardinals rather than the 2026 season after the trade deadline sell-off. That means the last 50 or so games in the major league campaign will bring plenty of bumps and bruises, but Bloom can take solace in the fact he built one of the best minor league systems in baseball. That future is not so far away as we saw the Springfield Cardinals put out a lineup that could rival any under level team.

After a couple of deals that drew praise from the baseball world, Chaim Bloom has assembled a lineup to be reckoned with in the Illinois capitol. 12 of the Cardinals' top 30 prospects (via MLB Pipeline) currently grace the Springfield Cardinals roster, with multiple ranking among the game's top 100 overall.

Catcher Rainiel Rodriguez and pitcher Liam Doyle are two players currently regarded as top prospects by MLB, but others in Springfield show up on other lists. Switch-pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje comes in at #72 on Fangraphs' top 100 list and newcomer Josiah Ragsdale has been applauded for a breakout campaign. Fans of the minor league system have been given plenty to cheer for all season long, as Joshua Baez has rolled up prospect boards and Tanner Franklin and Leo Bernal have also flirted with the rankings.

Tai Peete and Jack Gurevitch have also burst onto the Double-A scene after each put up great stat lines in the lower levels. Jesus Baez, who has had a record-breaking year across two levels, has blasted 29 total homers after being a throw-in by the Mets at last year's deadline and is breaking out in a big way. The massive power potential in the Springfield lineup has to make the big league team jealous, but the arms supporting the bats are just as impressive.

After a tough first half and quick promotions, Liam Doyle has started to lock in with the Double-A squad. The #22 prospect is finding his command as the season winds down and the 100 innings pitched mark nears. Not to be outdone, college teammate Tanner Franklin has kept up with Doyle's progression up the organizational ladder. The fireballing righty was promoted alongside Tai Peete after stringing together some solid outings as a starter.

Fans of Springfield will also get to see Yhoiker Fajardo (acquired in the Brendan Donovan deal) and Daniel Eagen first-hand. Eagen and Sandro Santana were just acquired from the Diamondbacks when Lars Nootbaar was traded to Arizona and both posses major strikeout stuff. The 6'4 Eagen has a solid fastball he can pair with three above-average offspeed pitches and has promise as a starter. Santana is a 21-year-old lefty and already dazzled in his Springfield debut, striking out three batters in 1.1 innings.

The final month of the major league season may be tough to stomach for fans of the St. Louis Cardinals, but for those who also pay attention to the minor leagues, there is hope for the future. While prospects are never a sure thing to pan out in the bigs, we at least have something to bring us out of the dog days of summer with a glimmer of hope.
