Trading away Brendan Donovan was a really tough decision for the St. Louis Cardinals, but man, they've struck gold with the prospect return they pried from Seattle and Tampa Bay, and center fielder Tai Peete seems to be the centerpiece of that deal.
Peete, 21, had a huge year for the Cardinals in his first season with their system, slashing .296/.359/.549 with 13 home runs, 39 extra-base hits, 56 RBI, and 16 stolen bases in just 66 games between High-A and Double-A, and was named one of the best Double-A playoff performers this year. Injuries kept Peete from producing more on the field this year, but he's certainly caught the eye of many with that performance.
Peete is participating in the Arizona Fall League this year and has been off to a tremendous start. Through his first three games, Peete was 6 for 14 at the plate, including a three-hit, three-steal game in his most recent outing.

Tai Peete could be a special center fielder for the Cardinals
Peete is oozing with talent on both sides of the ball, and while that talent still needs to be refined in order to be a good Major Leaguer, it's clear he's got the tools to be a high-end center fielder for a long time.
What is most exciting of all is just how much damage Peete does against right-handed pitching. On the season, he slashed .308/.376/.621, good for a .997 OPS in his 234 at-bats. Uh, yeah, that'll play! He needs to get better against southpaws (just a .650 OPS against them in 2026), but man, almost a 1.000 OPS against the handedness of pitcher that he'll see 70% of the time is a major, major tool in his belt moving forward.
The Cardinals' current young core is actually pretty right-handed heavy, with Jordan Walker, Ivan Herrera, Joshua Baez, the coming of Rainiel Rodriguez and Jesus Baez, as well as Masyn Winn. Adding a powerful left-handed bat to the mix of Alec Burleson, JJ Wetherholt, and Leo Bernal (who hits better from the left side but is a switch-hitter) can continue to help balance out this Cardinals lineup.
While there is no team that goes on to have a fully homegrown lineup and win in October, man, it's easy to dream about it. Imagine this future lineup, one that could be here in 2027:
1. 2B JJ Wetherholt
2. 3B Rainiel Rodriguez
3. 1B Alec Burleson
4. RF Jordan Walker
6. C Leo Bernal
7. DH Ivan Herrera
8. CF Tai Peete
9. SS Masyn Winn/Jesus Baez
I mean, wow. That could be deadly! Power, power, and more power all over that lineup to go along with speed and high-end defense — sounds like a recipe for success? I sure think so!
I expect Peete to be pushing for an appearance on top 100 lists as soon as 2027 lists start being formed, and if he doesn't make those, he'll be a candidate before he makes his MLB debut if he continues this level of production. Like we've seen with Burleson, who is one of the worst hitters in baseball against lefties and one of the best against righties, you can be a very good hitter still if you do that kind of damage against the most common pitcher you'll find.
Hopefully Peete can continue that momentum in 2026. If he does, this Donovan trade is going to look better and better as the years go on.
