The St. Louis Cardinals have made their second-round pick, and this is an interesting one. Prep OF Trejyn Fletcher is the highest player selected in the history of his state and shows crazy potential. How will he fare with the Cardinals?

The St. Louis Cardinals have selected OF Trejyn Fletcher with the 58th pick of the MLB Draft. Fletcher is a prep outfielder out of Deering High School in Maine. Fletcher was originally supposed to be in the 2020 MLB Draft, but reclassified to the 2019 MLB Draft.

Fletcher is known for his speed and ability in the field and has been called one of the best pure athletes in the draft, but he still is a very raw hitter, and it could be a while before he is even close to ready for Major League Baseball. He does show a lot of potential though, and can put some pop on the ball when he makes contact.

He had some solid numbers during his senior year of high school, hitting .456 with three home runs and five doubles and 17 steals. A problem though was that Fletcher played in Maine, and they are not a big baseball state at all.

As a result of that, his high school baseball team only played in a mere 16 games during his senior year, so his stat line is a very small sample size. In fact, Fletcher is now the highest draft pick to ever come out of Maine, as the second highest came in the eighth round by the Detroit Tigers back in 1977.

His play was good enough to get him recruited by Vanderbilt University, a team that is consistently one of the best in the country, and have developed some crazy good talent, including former number one pick Dansby Swanson and Dodgers star pitcher Walker Buehler. Fletcher is currently committed to Vanderbilt, and there are questions to whether he will honor that commitment or sign with St. Louis.

Regardless of whether he signs with the Cardinals, Fletcher is an interesting project of a player, with his raw athleticism, he can be a star outfielder in the Majors one day, and Fletcher will definitely be a player to follow in the coming years.
