The St. Louis Cardinals have claimed 2014 All-Star Tyson Ross off waivers. Could he be a great fit in St. Louis? Could this be the place where he turns his season around?

On Sunday morning, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have claimed former All-Star RHP Tyson Ross off waivers from the San Diego Padres. Ross has been struggling mightily as of late, putting up an 8.36 ERA since the end of June.

Before July, Ross was very solid, with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He was expected to be a hot name for the trade deadline, as the Padres were obvious sellers. The Padres could’ve brought in a big name prospect had they dealt him before he started struggling.

In his first July start, he allowed seven runs in seven innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his next start, things went even worse for Ross, as he allowed eight runs while only tossing two innings, which was the worst start in his entire career. Since those two abysmal starts, he has a 3.79 ERA over four starts.

He lost a lot of trade value from those two starts, so the Padres decided not to deal him at the trade deadline.

The Padres put Ross on waivers, which means one team can claim him. After a team, in this case the Cardinals, claim him, the Padres have 48 hours to make a trade with that team only, pull him back, or allow him to go to the team that claimed him. It seems like the Padres just let him go.

This is actually not a bad move for the Cardinals since they only have to pay $500k for a guy who can eat innings, and potentially fill a void in an injury-filled rotation.

Ross will likely make his way into the rotation, which will put John Gant or Austin Gomber out of the rotation. Gant is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, but after his last start, it seems likely that he will be the odd man out, but it could go either way.

Tyson Ross currently has a 4.54 ERA with a 6-9 record. He will join the Cardinals in Miami sometime this week.
