St. Louis Cardinals: Trade rumors and more trade rumors
The trade rumors surrounding the St. Louis Cardinals are driving me crazy! Hang on, because they are going to continue until after the July 31 trade deadline.
Josh Donaldson, Mike Moustakas, Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Nolan Arenado, and Manny Machado are just some of the names swirling around in the last month as trade targets for the St. Louis Cardinals. Dexter Fowler, Kolten Wong, Jose Martinez, Tommy Pham, and Tyler O’Neill are names being thrown around as possible trade bait the Cardinals might use to pick a bat or another arm.
Of course, here at Redbird Rants, we have been writing about all the rumors to keep our readers up to date on potential trades the Cards might execute. I have written about Moustakas, Syndergaard, deGrom, Donaldson, and Machado in the last month.
Even so, these @!*# rumors are beginning to drive me crazy!
Everyday there seems to be a new rumor started by a usually reputable media site. There is MLB.com, SI MLB, CBS MLB, Yahoo MLB, Fox MLB, MLB Radio, the Athletic, and even a site called MLB Trade Rumors.
All these sites are publishing trade information that is from their own reporting or they are just passing on rumors from another media site. So it seems at times it’s just someone trying to start a rumor.
True or false, rumor or not, the St. Louis Cardinals are getting their fair share of trade rumor coverage from several sites. Let’s look at the rumors surrounding two players the Cardinals could use.
Manny Machado… Let’s pass on a rumor
I recently wrote a piece for RedBird Rants that covered a trade rumor published at CBS MLB about Manny Machado and the Cardinals. CBS baseball analyst JIm Bowden claimed that eight teams were in the running for the services the Baltimore Orioles third baseman/shortstop. This list included the St. Louis Cardinals who were listed as one of the two favorites in trade talks, the other team being the Philadelphia Phillies.
The next day CBS MLB published a piece that said the Phillies were the leaders with seven other teams still in the mix. However, the Cardinals were no longer listed as a contender for the services of the power hitting Machado..
By Monday morning, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi wrote a piece that claimed that the Dodgers and the Brewers were leaders for Machado. This report seemed to mirror a previous report from USA’s Today Bob Nightengale which discussed the minor league prospects the Dodgers and Brewers could send to Baltimore for Machado.
Mike Moustakas…The Yankee rumor
Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has been part of the rumor mill surrounding the St. Louis Cardinals going back into the off-season. Many media sites connected the 29-year-old to the Cardinals as their needs for offense and infield defense became apparent during the season.
In late June, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported the Cardinals had a renewed interest in Moustakas and were even interested in trading Jose Martinez to make room in their infield.
By last week, this story changed with Jon Morosi reporting the New York Yankees were interested in ‘Moose’ to play first base. CBS MLB reported later in the day that the Yankees interest in Moustakas wasn’t ‘primary’ and other needs were. Regardless, the Cardinals seemed to either have lost interest or the media has lost interest in Moustakas going to St. Louis since the Yankees are involved.
July 31st and then it’s over
When will all this end? It will continue until the Trade Deadline of July 31st.
Manny Machado and Mike Moustakas are just two examples of how the MLB rumor mill is working overtime and shows its impact on the coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals.

As the recent road trip to the west coast has shown, the Cardinals have needs both offensively, defensively, and in the BP. The Cards also have the prospects that would interest any team starting a rebuilding process. Consequently, the Orioles and the Royals could make good trading partners for the Cardinals.
As a result, the rumors surrounding the Cardinals are certainly understandable and will continue until July 31st. Nevertheless, these trade rumors are getting on my nerves and I am ready for the Trade Deadline so we can all move on.
However, don’t misunderstand me. I will continue to write about these rumors until the Trade Deadline. I just wonder what there will be to write about after July 31st?
