St. Louis Cardinals: Bye-bye Eric Fryer, you will survive

The St. Louis Cardinals finally pulled the trigger on their top catching prospect finally bringing him to the “Bigs.” This meant that someone needed to go and that someone was the journeyman backup catcher.

The St. Louis Cardinals officially announced that the time of Carson Kelly has arrived. Fans have been honking that the time is nigh and it seems the front office has finally decided to listen. In the wake, however, the St. Louis Cardinals had to clear space and make room which spelled the end of Eric Fryer.

I was a fan of Fryer and I’m not sorry about that. Was he the best option for backup? Maybe not but he was a marked improvement over Brayan Pena who had served the role in 2015-2016. Wait, saying “served” is somewhat of a misnomer as Pena was injured for most of his time with the Cardinals.

Fryer joined the St. Louis Cardinals in November of 2015 after the Minnesota Twins allowed him to hit free agency after three seasons with the team. Fryer’s first tenure with the Cardinals was short and lasted only until July 3, 2016 when he was designated for assignment.

Before we jump there, let me show you his numbers from 2016 when he was first with our club:

Notice that his numbers were strong in 2016 but the Cardinals were content to ride the Yadier Molina/Pena/Alberto Rosario. There was also this promising catcher in Memphis by the name of Michael McKenry but he was quickly shipped off in July of 2016 as well.

Very quickly upon hitting the waiver wire, the Pittsburgh Pirates snatched Fryer and he showed a much more impressive time the remainder of the 2016 season. Here’s a look at his game logs from that season.

The St. Louis Cardinal might never have admitted that they regretted releasing Fryer but I, for one, believe they should have and might have. This all reversed in the offseason between 2016 and 2017 as the Cardinals were kicking the idea of a backup to Molina not named Carson Kelly.

More from St Louis Cardinals News

The decision to leave Kelly in AAA to get everyday play meant that the St. Louis Cardinals could reverse their mistake of 2016 and sign Fryer as the MLB backup for Molina. And this is just what they did.

That all said, Fryer faced only 34 games as Mike Matheny did all he could to ride Molina into the ground in response to his long extension. Now, as we approach the trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals have decided that it is best to DFA Fryer again rather than use him in a trade.

To this I say, worry not, Eric Fryer; you will survive. You will likely also have a renaissance like you did in 2016. And perhaps, based on this move and the other corresponding moves, the St. Louis Cardinals will have a renaissance of their own.

Next: Trade rumors update

What do you think? Did the St. Louis Cardinals make the right choice here? I believe they did but I do hate seeing Fryer depart.
