After Wednesday night’s cancellation, the St. Louis Cardinals have already had four postponements this season, and three in the last two weeks.

We’ve turned the page on April in St. Louis. That means a few different things. The St. Louis Cardinals have a month under their belt for the new season. It’s playoff time for the St. Louis Blues. And of course, it always seems to be raining in the Gateway City this time of year.

For teams across Major League Baseball, Opening Week always has an off day or two scheduled in, a provision for the typical, rainy, spring weather that greets much of the country. For the Cardinals, it seems that a rainout during the first week is inevitable.

Indeed, after splitting the first two games of the season with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, April 2 and Tuesday, April 4, the Cardinals’ third game of the series (scheduled for Wednesday, April 5), was postponed until the next day due to the weather.

That meant out of the first four days of the regular season in St. Louis, two were spent playing baseball, and two were spent at home waiting for a game the next day.

The Redbirds made it through the next two weeks of their schedule without any weather complications, but the last week of April saw two games cancelled in St. Louis because of more rain.

One was rescheduled a day later as the nightcap of a day/night doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays, while the make-up date for the postponed game against the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend is still pending.

The final series of the Cardinals’ current home stand against the Milwaukee Brewers was supposed to be a four game set, but the third game of the series had to be cancelled Wednesday evening. The make-up date for that game is also pending.

It appears that the two teams will get the game in Thursday, although first pitch, originally scheduled for 12:45 PM CT, had to be pushed back to 6:15 PM CT.

No one likes when mother nature interferes with the beauty of baseball’s everyday schedule. When four games get cancelled during the first month and change of the season, it makes the wait for the next game seem even longer.

Does the fluidity of the Cardinals’ early-season schedule have anything to do with their mediocre start? Perhaps. It can be difficult for a team to get on a roll when they’re playing only five or six times a week out of the gate.

Looking ahead to the rest of the May schedule, the Cardinals already have four scheduled off-days. More rainouts would not be welcome to the fans, and I’m sure the players, although they enjoy a break here and there, just want to be out on the field under blue skies and warm temperatures.
