St. Louis Cardinals: Luke Voit continues to surge in possible MVP season
St. Louis Cardinals’ Luke Voit continues to put together a spectacular 2016 season as he was one of the best players in the Texas League during August.
The St. Louis Cardinals’ first base prospect has remained the most consistent bat in the Springfield Cardinals lineup as they push towards the Texas League playoffs.
With progress showed by the likes of Harrison Bader, Carson Kelly, and David Washington, the first basemen/corner outfielder for St. Louis Cardinals AA affiliate, Springfield, has quietly put together an MVP type season. Voit was named the Texas League Player of the Month for August, joining Luke Weaver as the other Springfield Cardinal to receive the honor this season.
The Wildwood, MO native was the hottest bat in August, batting with a slash line of .366/.440/.591 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and 15 runs scored. Those numbers only made Voit’s case for most valuable player in the Texas League stronger, as he leads the league in batting average (.298), tied for seventh in HRs (19), tied for fourth in RBI (72, with teammate Paul Dejong), and first in OPS (.858).
Those numbers are spectacular when you consider that in April Voit hit .239 with just four homers and eight RBI. His numbers in the next three months kept the Springfield Cardinals afloat as they’ve seen their best bats get promoted.
This is including two members of the Springfield S.W.A.T. (nickname coined by yours truly) in Harrison Bader and Carson Kelly. Bader returned to the team in late August as the team prepares for the playoffs.
Along with TL Player of the Month honor, Voit was named as a postseason All-Star, again along with starting pitcher Luke Weaver. Voit was one of six baby birds to be named to the All-Star game, and on top of that, he left the night with the home run derby crown in front of the hometown crowd at Hammons Field, defeating another MVP candidate in Midland Rockhound’s Matt Chapman.
Other candidates include now Houston Astros major league INF Alex Bregman and Los Angeles Dodgers AA Tulsa 2B Willie Calhoun.

Despite spending the entire season in Springfield, Luke Voit continues to keep a positive attitude as he feels blessed with the opportunity to have a chance at playing baseball for a living.
The former college catcher at Missouri State University, also located in Springfield, MO (Go Bears!), Voit has overcome shoulder surgery to get to this point. The surgery caused the position change, which has worked out thus far.

Luke Voit did not receive one of the six invites from the St. Louis Cardinals to join the Arizona Fall League, which may indicate the organization’s opinion on him at this point. However, do not be surprised when Voit makes an appearance on the AAA Memphis Redbirds roster to start the season, or not too long into the 2017 campaign.
