Breaking News: The St. Louis Cardinals have traded Jayson Aquino to the Baltimore Orioles for cash.

An expendable left-handed pitcher, Jayson Aquino, has been traded today to the Orioles for cash.  Aquino was designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and today has found a new home in the Baltimore organization.

Aquino came to the Cardinals organization this past December.  He appeared in one spring training game this season and was saddled with the blown save but turned it around to secure himself the win credit.  He was holding a spot on the 40-man roster, was assigned to Memphis for this season, but then was released on Sunday.

Looking at his minor league numbers, Aquino’s minor league career spans six seasons.  In these, he has appeared in 99 games amassing 591 innings pitched and holds a minor league career 2.94 ERA.

Leading to his trade, the Memphis roster had yet to be released.  This, in addition to Mozeliak’s visit yesterday to formally announce the sale of the majority share to Peter B. Freund, now makes it clear why the roster hadn’t yet been set.  This has been corrected now.

Looking at the cash trade, I find myself wondering if this is just one of the dominoes yet to fall.  With cash in hand and with a vacancy on the 40-man, might the organization look to add an inexpensive piece?  Could this trade provide momentum for the Michael Bourn rumors?

Left-handed pitchers are usually something worth holding onto but the organization felt differently about Aquino.  If this statement is not true, then the organization sees the chance to make the departure work for a better arrival.  Better might not mean a pitcher but time will tell.

I have many more articles coming in the near days especially in light of tonight being Memphis’ opening.  Stay tuned for more interesting pieces to come and let’s hope that today’s off-day will allow the big boys time to regroup so we can go into Atlanta and bring home three wins to right this ship.
