The St. Louis Cardinals were able to pull off a victory against the Miami Marlins today, after falling behind early.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ offense (mainly minor leaguers) struggled for most of the game against the Marlins pitching. However, this wasn’t due to lack of chances, as the Marlins gave the Cardinals many opportunities to get on the board. The Cardinals’ pitching also gave the Marlins opportunities to extend their lead, but the game stayed a close game throughout.

The Marlins held a 2-0 lead for 3 and 1/3 innings, after getting a couple of runs off of Marco Gonzales in the third inning. With ten hits the Marlins had plenty of opportunities to extend this lead, but they didn’t.

The Cardinals were able to get on board with their first run in seventh inning, as Carlos Peguero lined a double down the right field line, to move himself into scoring position and two batters later, Mike Ohlman drove a ball up the middle of the infield scoring Peguero and making the game a 2-1 game. Unfortunately, the Cardinals weren’t able to add to their total that inning, as David Washington and Aledmys Diaz stranded Ohlman at first.

However, the Cardinals got right back at it in the eight inning, as Charlie Tilson, Patrick Wisdom, and Dean Anna were able to get on in front of Jacob Wilson. Wilson struck out with the bases loaded, leaving things up to Anthony Garcia, who had made some great defensive plays already in the game.

Garcia worked a good six pitch at bat in which he laced the sixth pitch done the left field line for a two run double scoring Wisdom and Wilson, bringing the score to 3-2.

The Cardinals were unable to add to the lead in the eighth or ninth, but the pitching of Trey Nielsen and Miguel Socolovich held the lead up, and they defeated the Marlins 3-2, for their second win of Spring Training.

While it would have been nice to see the big league guys play a little bit more, it was neat to see guys like Anthony Garcia and Mike Ohlman (who I have talked about a lot this offseason) come through.

Decisions and Top Performers

Trey Nielsen who we talked about last week in our “Dark Horse Prospects” piece, wound up with the Win, and Socolovich came down with the Save.

Your top offensive performers today were, Anthony Garcia (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI) and Carlos Peguero (1-2, 2B, BB, R). Peguero continues to impress, as he doubled in a run in the first game and is hitting .500 so far. A strong season by both of these guys could see them have some time on the big league club at some point.
