The St. Louis Cardinals are going with a lineup of newcomers in their first Spring Training game of 2016.

The St. Louis Cardinals lineup for the first Spring Training game of the season is up, and it’s chalk full of newcomers. Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com tweeted out a photo of the lineup earlier this morning:

The St. Louis Cardinals will face Florida Atlantic University in the exhibition matchup. It’s not uncommon for teams to take on a college or university early on in spring training. More than anything, it is a nice gesture for those surrounding colleges or universities to get some live action and possibly meet some Major Leaguers.

It’s a bit intriguing that the lineup is completely full with newcomers in the Cardinals camp. I’m sure FAU Owls players will be a bit disappointed that at least one Cardinals regular isn’t in the lineup for the first couple of innings of this game.

But the lineup isn’t the biggest surprise. Early on in spring especially, managers like to get looks and chances for those new guys to see what they can do.

My guy to watch in this game is lefty starter Austin Gomber.

Gomber is an FAU alum, which probably makes the start more special for him. The 22-year old was 15-3 last year in Peoria with a 2.67 ERA and a .970 WHIP in 135 IP. It will be interesting to see what the left-hander can bring during his first action of the spring and how many more starts he gets throughout the month of March.

The Cardinals will take on the Florida Atlantic Owls at 12:05 CT/1:05 ET.
