St Louis Cardinals: Fan Reacts to Cubbie Nurse, Meets Trevor Rosenthal (Video)
St Louis Cardinals’ uber-fan Ethan Cortez gets surprise visit from Lindsey and Trevor Rosenthal while in hospital
Late in 2014, the Cortez family adopted a rescued coon hound for a family pet. The family loved the dog and she regularly slept with the kids over the past year. On January 2nd, the dog reacted very uncharacteristically to their son and St. Louis Cardinals’ fan Ethan, while he was returning to bed and bit his face lacerating his upper and lower lips.
“I remember standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at my wife and son, both covered in blood,” recalls Jotham, Ethan’s father. Horrified, he bolted up the stairs, grabbed a washcloth and began applying pressure to stop the bleeding. He passed the duty to his wife while he grabbed clothes for Ethan, knowing a trip to the ER was imminent.
As he gathered the garments, Jotham grabbed a red Cardinals shirt that he thought would “camouflage” the blood pouring from Ethan’s mouth. Little did he know that all these unusual occurrences and split second decisions were embarking the family on a phenomenal adventure.
As this strange night progressed, the family ended up in St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It was there when the pain medication that was administered began to take effect on Ethan. One of his nurses, Jody Sims, began a conversation with him about being a Cubs fan. Things began to get interesting as you can see from the video from Jotham and what he commented in his Facebook post,
So during the traumatic episode, we had a little bit of comic relief from Ethan when he finds out one of his nurses is a Cubs fan. The medication had obviously taken effect at this point. This kid is a true Cards fan! #cardinalnation St. Louis Cardinals
The hospital video has over 421,000 views and 4,500 shares at the time of writing this post, being online for only two weeks. In the video Ethan says “You’re not right” and she humorously responds, “I’m not right” to ease his mind. It was amazing that with all the trauma that had happened to him, Ethan was more upset about his nurse being a Cubs fan than anything else!

Everyone agreed this nurse’s only flaw was being a Cubs fan as she was a true professional with a caring personality. The drug induced reaction “You’re not right” was thought to be around a Cubs nurse practicing in a St. Louis hospital, but nobody really knows where it came from – including Ethan. Charity Cortez said this behavior was not typical for Ethan, so maybe a drugged tongue spoke normal thoughts.
While the dog bite and plastic surgery to repair his lips and muscles was traumatic, Ethan received some delightful karma in return. He and his family got to meet St Louis Cardinals’ closer Trevor Rosenthal and his wife Lindsey. Dad posted,
We just got to meet Trevor & Lindsey Rosenthal!! How awesome is that?!
In addition to the selfies, St Louis Children’s Hospital staff captured video of the endearing exchange between Ethan and Trevor. The Cortez family reported that the Rosenthal’s showed tremendous thoughtfulness by giving their time to Ethan.
Trevor laughed with Ethan after telling him he watched the video as they took time for family photos with Ethan’s sister joining in the fun. Although Yadi has been Ethan’s favorite player for several years, it’s reported that Rosenthal just might have taken that coveted spot!
Ethan happens to be a pitcher for Team Missouri, a St. Louis area select baseball team, making the visit from the Cardinal closer even more meaningful. Nobody reported if he gained some key tips for throwing a fastball, but with Ethan on the mend it’s not a good sign for his opponents in the upcoming season.
Get well soon, good luck and keep cheering for ours Cardinals Ethan!
