St. Louis Cardinals POTW: August 16-22

It wasn’t a tremendous week for the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-4 on the week including two disappointing performances against the Padres to end the week. Despite the team performance, some players still shine bright. Here is a look at one of the brightest of the week, Yadier Molina.

Yadi didn’t have a tremendous average on the week, just 5-for-21, but two of those five hits were home runs. The last home run being his 100th career home run, one which also led to the Cardinals eventual win that night.

On Sunday Yadi didn’t have an impressive day at the plate, going 0-for-4 in the final game of the series against the Marlins. The Cardinals lost that game 6-4.

A home run by Yadi early in Monday’s game would eventually lead to a slim 2-1 win against the Giants. He went 1-for-3 in the game with a walk to his credit.

Tuesday was much like Sunday, finishing the game going 0-for-3 at the plate. The Cardinals lost 2-0.

Wednesday was by far his most impressive game of the week. A 3-for-4 performance including the previously mentioned home run, the go ahead home run in the game and the 100th of his career. The home run guided the Cardinals to a 4-3 win.

After an off day on Thursday, Yadi did manage one productive at bat on Friday against the Padres. He went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. The Cardinals fell to the Padres 9-3.

Finally yesterday he didn’t put up good production at the plate, but neither did most of the team. Yadi finished the game 0-for-3 as the Cardinals fell 8-0.

Not a lot of hits, not a great average, but the importance of the hits he did attain plus the career milestone he reached with his second home run of the week is the reason he is this week’s Cardinals player of the week.
