The St. Louis Cardinals make a splash move that surprises no fan of the Cardinals this season.

In what could be described as one of the most necessary moves the St. Louis Cardinals could make, Jonathan Broxton has been designated for assignment. After posting an abysmal 6.89 ERA thus far this season, the Cardinals had no other choice. In removing Broxton from the team the Cardinals are on the hook for the remaining salary owed to him.

Coming up for the Cardinals to replace Broxton is John Gant. Gant was acquired this past off-season in a trade with the Braves for Jaime Garcia which also netted the Cardinals Luke Dykstra and Chris Ellis. Some fans will recognize him as the guy with the odd pitching motion. Gant posted a 2.19 ERA while with the Memphis Redbirds.

After this move the Cardinals have made a statement: the performance of the bullpen has been unacceptable. Clearly taking the hit for the rest of Broxton’s contract was a reason they waited so long, but in the end this was the only option.

Who is next? Brett Cecil? Will Cardinals Nation finally learn if he is healthy or requires the disabled list?

How about Kevin Siegrist? Will the St. Louis Cardinals do something different with him?

And what is going on with Magneuris Sierra? If you’ve followed Twitter then you’ve seen plenty of conjectures that Sierra was headed for St. Louis only to never see him in St. Louis. It wouldn’t surprise me if we start to see people tweeting that they’ve seen Sierra at a local Dennys!

The Cardinals will face the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at 7:15PM CST where Carlos Martinez will take the hill against Hyun-Jin Ryu. It remains to be seen if John Gant will make it to the game in time to be in uniform but if he does, expect him to be available to pitch.
