Mike Shannon Likes Current Cardinals Team

Most times, a broadcaster will try to sell you the fact a team is stronger than it really is in an effort to entice fans to come to the ballpark.

Mike Shannon has never been one of those broadcasters. If something is on his mind he won’t be afraid to say it.

It should come as no surprise to Cardinal fans that the longtime broadcaster is very happy about this year’s team, specifically the performances of players like Marco Gonzales and Jason Heyward.

“He’s going to be plus-plus. He’s a five-star guy. He can hit for power. He’s a very good defensive player, and he’s a great guy to have in the clubhouse,” Shannon told MLB reporter Jenifer Langosch in a recent interview.

Shannon believes the Chicago Cubs will be a better team than last year, and he also thinks the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are bubble teams that could go either way.

Shannon, who is entering his 44th season as a Cardinals broadcaster, believes this team won’t be overpowering in terms of power and will have to move runners over via other methods.

Shannon definitely speaks like a broadcaster who has seen his fair share of successful teams and failures. Considering he played on some pretty darn good 1960s Cardinals squads, he ought to know what he’s talking about.
