St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is annoyed at the criticism that is being directed towards the coaching staff.

“You have two factors,” Matheny said before Wednesday’s game according to Derrick Goold.. “You take it personal if it doesn’t get done, even though you’re going about it right. You’re putting as much work if not more now than what you did last year when things were going so well. You’ve got people taking cheap shots all the time. You’re human. You wear that. Plus you know that the (players) are not happy with where the guys are right now. If you have coaches who don’t care, then they’re just putting in their time and chalking it up to a number of issues.

“That’s not what we have.”

The team’s hitting philosophy by John Mabry and David Bell have been described as “process-driven.” How the team is approaching things this season compared to last year, when they led the NL in runs, is clearly not getting the job done.

The Cardinals are currently sitting two games back of first place in the National League Central Division. The Milwaukee Brewers are in first and are followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Entering games on Thursday night, the Cardinals are sitting on a 63-56 record. They are 33-25 at Busch Stadium and 30-21 on the road.
