The Cards Start Out Strong And Press On Late, But Are Still Unable To Finish The Job Against The Marlins

The Cardinals had a great start on the heels of a great first inning pitched by Kyle Lohse. The Bottom of the first saw Ryan Theriot lead off with a single, a Pujols walk, Berkman singled to score Theriot for the first run and the very next play Yadi drove in Albert to bring the score to 2-0 to end the first.

The Marlins caught up and then some in the third on the strength of a Gaby Sanchez grand slam to give the Marlins their first lead of the game at 4-2.

The bottom of that very inning the Cardinals brought some more fire power of their own to combat the Marlins.

Colby singled on a great little bunt play to lead things off, Holliday singled bringing the runners to first and second, and next up was Lance Berkman who blasts a home run to right field. He drives in all three and brings the score to 5-4 in favor of the home team.

The lead was very short lived as Mike Stanton ties the game in the top of the fifth, the score is now 5-5. Kyle Lohse was pulled after a commendable 6 innings, going for 5 runs on 6 total hits. Fernando Salas hame in to a hitless 7th inning and Mitchell Boggs took over in the top of the 8th.

The very first batter was Mike Stanton and he tripled to center and Greg Dobbs hit a sac fly the very next at bat to score Mike Stanton and the game was 6-5 in favor of the Marlins. The Cardinals sent out Trever Miller and Miguel Batista in the game to finish off the Marlins 9th and we came up the bottom of the 9th to try and at least tie the game.

Daniel Descalso was first and he walked, Tyler Greene put down a sac bunt sending the runner to second with just one out. Allen Craig strikes out bringing the total to two outs but Ryan Theriot singled on the very next at bat to send Descalso to third. With runners on first and third along with two outs, Colby is our last shred of hope but he abruptly grounds out to Omar Infante at second who tags and ends the game.

Edward Mujica (3-1 5.11 ERA) won the game for the Marlins in relief, Mitchell Boggs (0-2 2.30 ERA) was accredited for the loss, and Leo Nunez got his 10th save on the season.
