The St. Louis Cardinals have received largely positive reviews regarding their 2026 season. While the major-league team's record wasn't what many fans wanted, it was a far better season than even some of the most optimistic pundits thought it would be. Part of that organizational success rests on the front office's work. At least two members of that core could be poached this offseason by rival teams: Randy Flores and Rob Cerfolio.
Randy Flores has long been the Cardinals' draft director, and he's the current assistant general manager overseeing scouting. He drafted players such as Tommy Edman, Alec Burleson, Brendan Donovan, JJ Wetherholt, and Jordan Walker. He's been very good at finding value in picks later in the draft, and the Cardinals have done a good job at producing high-value players thanks to Flores's work in the draft room.
Rob Cerfolio is much newer to the organization. He was brought on in 2024 from the Cleveland organization. Formerly the Guardians' director of player development, Cerfolio filled a similar role in St. Louis as the organization's Assistant General Manager, Player Development & Performance.
Cerfolio's influence on the organization has been vast, and several players have cited Cerf's assistance on their own personal growth. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, other organizations have also picked up on Rob Cerfolio's skill as a front office staff member.
Cardinals assistant general manager Rob Cerfolio is receiving interest from other organizations in MLB.
Per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Rob Cerfolio has already received plenty of interest from other teams to join their front offices.
"Rob Cerfolio, the Cardinals' assistant general manager in charge of player performance and player development, is expected to draw interest from at least one team for a front office position," writes Goold.
In the same story, Goold mentioned that Randy Flores has also received interest from other organizations, specifically the Los Angeles Angels' opening.
The interesting part about Flores and the Angels is that John Mozeliak is the interim general manager in Los Angeles. He's starting a search for his next general manager, but conflicting reports have indicated that Mozeliak will shift into the role permanently at the end of the season.
If the Cardinals were to lose Cerfolio just two years after hiring him, the ramifications might be pretty dramatic. He's helped to revamp a farm system and player development group that was desperate for upgrades prior to his arrival. Cerfolio has also been quite present in the public, making appearances on podcasts and YouTube videos quite regularly.
Losing Flores, however, might not be as detrimental. Zoch Mortiner, the organization's director of Amateur Acquisition, has very quickly grown in prowess in St. Louis. Zach is a former writer for Baseball Prospectus who became an area scout for the Cardinals in 2013 and eventually a national crosschecker in 2019. Mortimer took over draft responsibilities for the Cardinals this past year, and St. Louis received rave reviews for their draft work this year.
When a front office and coaching staff grows in notoriety throughout baseball, it's reasonable to assume that the people who have made it successful could be poached by rival organizations. With an open general manager position, there is hope that Chaim Bloom elevates Rob Cerfolio to that position to keep him in the organization. However, Cerfolio could seek a different opportunity with another team.
Hopefully the Cardinals can hold on to one of the men who helped this rebuild go quicker than expected.
