The Houston Astros have officially announced that they have hired Randy Flores as their next General Manager. Flores was formerly the St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager since 2019. Prior to his appointment in that role, Flores was the director of scouting from 2015-2019. He was the head of their drafting from 2016-2025.
Flores replaces Dana Brown, who served as the Astros' general manager from 2023 through his mutual departure on August 24th, 2026.
In Jim Crane's official statement on the Astros' Twitter/X page, he lauded Flores's draft acumen. "Randy has had a huge impact on the Cardinals over the last 10 seasons. Throughout the entire interview process we've been thoroughly impressed with Randy and his background in scouting and player acquisition."
This is not the first time that the St. Louis Cardinals have lost an executive to the Houston Astros. In 2011, the Astros hired Jeff Luhnow, formerly the Cardinals' vice president of scouting and player development. Flores later replaced Chris Correa in St. Louis. Correa was sentenced to 46 months in prison following a hacking scandal in 2013 and 2014 in which Correa stole confidential information from Houston's system.
Randy Flores leaving the St. Louis Cardinals will have huge ripple effects.
Randy Flores will almost certainly remake Houston's front office and on-field coaching staff in short order. While Chaim Bloom has been adamant that he expects "status quo" regarding the coaching staff, coaches like Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay, both of whom played for the Cardinals like Flores, are prime candidates to fill Houston's manager vacancy.
Bloom has also been clear that it's a good sign that other organizations want St. Louis's coaches and managers. Rob Cerfolio has been rumored as a candidate for the Los Angeles Angels' GM spot, and Descalso and Jay have been rumored as future managers for several years now. Even Yadier Molina has received ample interest from a manager's perspective. Would Flores be as bold as to poach Albert Pujols from the open manager market?
The Cardinals won't be bereft of front office talent. Chaim Bloom has done an excellent job filling out his staff. Rob Cerfolio, Larry Day, Matt Pierpont, and Zach Mortimer will capably steady the ship. Mortimer handled the Cardinals' 2026 draft class that included highly-touted prospects such as Trevor Condon, Tegan Kuhns, and Rocco Maniscalco.
The departure of Randy Flores won't hurt the Cardinals much in the front office. With Zach Mortimer already taking over drafting duties, there is plenty of backfill within the organization. Where this move may hurt St. Louis the most would be on the field. Coaches like Daniel Descalso and Jon Jay were key figures in the club's overachievement these past two years. If they leave, valuable experience and instruction for a rising crop of young players will leave as well.
