The St. Louis Cardinals marketing team will be seeing plenty of green when Rainiel Rodriguez makes his debut with the major league squad in the coming years, and that's not just in the currency that the club's going to rake in as a result of his potential performance. According to former Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick, people around Rodriguez have christened the heavy-hitting catcher "The Hulk."

Ludwick, who works as an outfield coordinator for the Cardinals, heaped praise on Rodriguez, the Cardinals' consensus top prospect, during an interview with 101 ESPN's BK & Ferrario, calling him perhaps the best hitter he's ever seen in the organization. In a manner decidedly unlike the Marvel superhero, though, Rodriguez can embark on a path of baseball destruction without requiring emotional stress. In fact, Ludwick commended his mental toughness.

"Nothing fazes him," said Ludwick.

Some of those who follow Cardinals prospects closely were already aware of Rodriguez's alter ego, and as the unflappable backstop continues to destroy Double-A pitching, his legend should grow until he finally graces the big screen that is Busch Stadium. Cardinals fans are undoubtedly elated to have such an ascendant star on their hands so far, but when — and where — they will see him is still up in the air.

Rainiel Rodriguez's rampage may take a bit to get going for Cardinals

Rodriguez is still a tender 19 years of age, so the Cardinals can afford to take their time with him even as he dominates at every level, and the Cardinals' abundance of catching depth backs that up. The team still appears steadfast in playing Iván Herrera behind the plate despite his subpar throwing arm; Pedro Pagés remains in the organization for his defensive chops; and Jimmy Crooks, despite fans' souring on him after his promotion from Triple-A Memphis, is still around as well. That's not to mention Leonardo Bernal, who is a talented defender and could replace Pagés at some point.

One occurrence that could throw a wrench into those plans is if the Cardinals opt to use Rodriguez at different positions, and Assistant General Manager Rob Cerfolio said in an interview that the team is pushing positional versatility down on the farm so the players are ready to jump in wherever the major league club may need them. Rodriguez was already introduced to playing first base earlier this season, and with the Cardinals' biggest area of need right now being third base, don't be surprised if Rodriguez is soon acquainted with the hot corner as well.

The major league season in 2027 is in question with a lockout looming, but minor league baseball will continue unabated, and Rodriguez will likely return to Double-A Springfield, especially if the team wants to give him a taste of third base or the outfield. If all goes according to plan, it's possible that Rodriguez receives his first cup of coffee with the Cardinals late in 2028. Regardless of where he plays, fans should buy their Hulk merchandise now, because if Rodriguez lives up to his immense potential, it's going to fly off of shelves all around St. Louis.
