There is so much buzz around the St. Louis Cardinals farm system right now, and rightfully so. The fun thing about having such a talented group of youngsters is that there are so many names who don't get enough attention, and Miguel Hernandez certainly fits that bill. If he continues the trajectory he seems to be on, he may be one of the Cardinals' top prospects by this time next year.
Ranked number 17 in a deep Cardinals farm system according to Baseball America, Hernandez split time between the Florida Complex League and Single-A this season, and slashed .282/.432/.492 with 11 home runs and 46 RBI in 74 games played. Hernandez turned 18 years old in June, which makes his production at such a young age even more impressive.
Back in June, Baseball America ranked Hernandez as one of the best prospects in the FCL before his promotion to Palm Beach, pointing to his strong swing decisions and power at the plate that could grow even further as he fills out his frame. It's hard to find prospects with this much going for him at a young age and plays a premium position (shortstop) with the ability to move to second or third base in the future.
This has to be one of the most intriguing prospects heading into 2027.

Miguel Hernandez could become a top 100 prospect with Cardinals in 2027
Hernandez will likely begin 2027 in Low-A since he only played 25 games there in 2026, but if he continues the production he showed last season and earns a promotion to High-A or even Double-A, it will be very difficult to ignore his upside on the national stage.
Hernandez set the Cardinals' FCL home run record with nine this year and was named to the FCL All-Star team in the process. Again, he was doing that as one of the youngest players at the level.
Already a solid defender for his age, if he's able to stick at shortstop, that will only raise what his ceiling is as a prospect, but even if he does have to move off the position, his power/speed upside paired with his advanced approach at the plate makes him a prospect worth dreaming on and watching closely.
Rainiel Rodriguez, Jesus Baez, Joshua Baez, Leo Bernal, Tanner Franklin, Liam Doyle, Quinn Mathews, Tai Peete, Tekoah Roby, and more all take the headlines right now, but the next wave even beyond them that includes Hernandez, Trevor Condon, Emmanuel Luna, Yairo Padilla, Rocco Maniscalco, Alexander Frias, and more has the kind of tools and potential to rocket up lists in very short order.
Not all top 30 prospects lists are created equal. There are guys in the 10s and even 20s of the Cardinals' prospect lists right now that, a few years ago, would have been easily among their top 10 prospects. That's just how much talent the Cardinals have accumulated as of late.
It's especially exciting to see how many of those guys play premium positions. It wasn't that long ago that Masyn Winn was the only shortstop prospect that gave any reason to be excited in the system. Now Hernandez, Baez, Padilla, and Maniscalco all have their own arguments as future impact Major League shortstops.
Keep an eye on Hernandez going into next year, as he may become a very popular name in short order.
