As the season wraps up and the Cardinals are all but eliminated in the playoff race, it can be fun to look in the rearview mirror at memories that serve the Redbirds well. Adam Wainwright sure remembers the fun times, and he shared a crazy story.
In a recent interview with KSDK News, “Waino” went in depth about his relationship with Mets fans.
“Oh yeah, Mets fans hate me,” Wainwright joked. “In fact, so much so, [either] last year or the year before, the Knicks were playing and they had this six-point lead with like 40 seconds left, and they blew it in the playoffs.
“I was in a room with all these Mets fans that were watching the Knicks game in New York. As soon as they blew that lead, they looked over at me and went, ‘That was YOU! YOU did that!’
Wainwright continued, “They blame me for everything. My favorite, like, troll yelling at me from a fan ever came from Citi Field a couple of years ago. This was like my second-to-last year ever playing, and a guy from above the dugout just called out, and it went quiet. He’s like, ‘Wainwright!!!’ and everyone’s waiting to see what he’s gonna say, and he goes, ‘You ruined my life in the fourth grade.’
“It’s my favorite chirp ever. I love it. I was so proud of that moment.”
Wainwright did much more than ruin every New Yorker’s relationship with Carlos Beltran, but those Mets memories carry a boatload of cinema.
