Historic Cardinals World Series team set to join already loaded event at Busch Stadium

The current iteration of the St. Louis Cardinals has plenty hurdles to clear to get back into perennial contention, but the historic franchise has a track record of success to be proud of. While the future looks bright, the organization has to dive all the way back to 2011 for their last championship but one of the most memorable teams in franchise history will be recognized this year. In the 20th year since winning the 2006 World Series, the Cardinals will be hosting a reunion to bring back many legends and fan favorites.

As the season winds down, the Cardinals will be celebrating their past stars and teams in a massive weekend in September. Team officials just announced that on September 11, many Cardinals alumni will be returning to Busch Stadium to celebrate their 2026 championship season. This celebration comes the day before Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols, and Bill Sherdel are forever enshrined as legends as the newest members of the Cardinals Hall of Fame.

Cardinals to honor 2006 World Series team during massive weekend of celebrations

The 2004 and 2005 St. Louis Cardinals teams were built like juggernauts and performed as much during the regular season. Each year, the team finished with more than 100 wins and looked to be favorites heading into the postseason. Unfortunately, both teams fell short of the ultimate goal with the Cardinals losing to the Red Sox in the 05 World Series and the still-NL Astros beating the Cardinals in six games in the 06 NLCS.

The 2006 team still had plenty of big names, but many of them were exiting their prime or being expected to mimic career years from the past season. The struggle was real that season, but luckily for Tony LaRussa, the rest of the NL Central just deemed the Cardinals as division champions. This paid off in a huge way since the Cardinals only won 83 games and would not have made the playoffs if they did not win the regular season division title.

With the low win total, they were seen as an easy opponent by those who got matched up with them in the postseason. Even as the Cardinals defeated the Padres and Mets to get to the World Series, the AL pennant-winning Detroit Tigers mocked the matchup saying they were going to win the trophy in three games. That 95-win Tiger team overlooked the fact that the Cardinals had a Hall of Fame manager leading a roster that included MVP runner-up Albert Pujols, third-place Cy Young finished Chris Carpenter, and multiple other stars and/or Hall of Famers.

Many of those players will be returning for the weekend celebrations and will be honored with a special truck ride around the warning track before Friday's game. The team also has special event tickets available for those fans who want a closer look at the event as World Series MVP David Eckstein, Scott Spiezio, Jeff Suppan, and Brad Thompson will be hosting a pre-game panel to talk to fans about the historic 2006 season.
