The St. Louis Cardinals finally have a new general manager in Rob Cerfolio, and he's the perfect candidate to come alongside Chaim Bloom as they lead the organization into their next contending window. This was first reported by Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The Cardinals GM role has been open since the conclusion of the 2024 season, when Michael Girsch was reassigned to an advisor role.

This news shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who has closely followed the Cardinals' turnaround internally under Bloom's leadership. Cerfolio, 34, was brought in by Bloom back in October 2024 as the Cardinals' assistant general manager overseeing player development and performance. Since his arrival, Cerfolio has overseen the Cardianls farm system jump from a mediocre spot to probably the best in all of baseball.

Cerfolio interviewed for the Athletics' lead baseball operations gig when it was open this past offseason, and if he wanted the role, he probably would have landed it. Cerfolio has instead opted to stay with St. Louis and will now officially operate as the number two executive in baseball operations alongside Bloom.

Rob Cerfolio's incredible success with Cardinals led to GM promotion

For the Cardinals, Cerfolio's promotion is the perfect blend of an internal hire while raising up the voice of someone who has plenty of experience outside the Cardinals organization to lean on.

Cerfolio got his start to his baseball operations career with the Cleveland Guardians, who have become one of the best organizations in baseball at developing talent. When Cerfolio arrived in St. Louis, it was at a time when anonymous sources within the Cardinals organization were ringing the bell about how bad things had gotten with their own player development, and Bloom tapped Cerfolio as the man to help him revive what is supposed to be the heartbeat of the Cardinals.

Since then, Cerfolio oversaw the hires of Larry Day (farm director), Matt Pierpont (director of pitching), Dalton Hurd (director of hitting) and Carl Kochan (director of performance) among other hires. This group has since seen major gains across the entire farm system, both with players who were already in St. Louis when they got there and talent they've acquired via the draft, international market, and trades.

Any time you talk to anyone with the Cardinals, they sing Cerfolio's praises. It's clear that he's a special executive, which is exactly what the Cardinals needed when they replaced longtime player development director Gary LaRoque in order to revive what had broken. And now that success has earned Cerfolio the GM job.

This promotion should also help the Cardinals keep their brain trust intact for the foreseeable future. They just lost assistant general manager Randy Flores to the Houston Astros as their GM, but between Joe Douglas (pro scouting), Zach Mortimier (amateur scouting), and Jacob Buffa (international scouting), they've got a strong group in place to keep their scouting success going. Cerfolio will continue to speak into the Cardinals' player development moving forward, but he also has an excellent staff alongside him.

It would have been a major loss to see Cerfolio leave St. Louis for a promotion so quickly, so chalk this up as an offseason win for the Cardinals to be able to retain their prized executive.

How the Cardinals plan to address their open assistant general manager roles is unclear at the moment, but it's entirely possible that they do not fill one of or both positions at this time based on how strong their internal structures are currently.
