Cardinals farm system receives A+ grade as team is positioned to contend for years to come

I feel like I've written 100 stories like this already, and I probably have, but Baseball America just gave us another reason to brag on the state of the St. Louis Cardinals farm system after giving their system an A+ grade, joining just the San Francisco Giants as teams with that level of a grade for the 2026 season.

The Cardinals, whose system ranked second in all of baseball by Baseball America in their midseason farm system rankings update, have improved so much over the last 24 months under Chaim Bloom's leadership and a revamped player development, performance, and scouting groups. Many names remain in the mix from John Mozeliak's tenure, but the blend of new voices, empowering those who remained, and increased investment in these areas has turned the Cardinals' farm system from a weakness into arguably the best in baseball.

In Ian Cundall's write-up of the Cardinals system over on Baseball America, he began by saying, "Even with the graduation of JJ Wetherholt, who looks like a future star, the Cardinals have one of the most talented systems in the game. Their player development group continues to shine as the breakouts drastically outweigh the disappointments." You'll have to read the full write-up over on Baseball America, but Cundall finished his report by saying, "...and the team is now positioned to contend for years to come as their talent continues to matriculate up to the majors.

Cardinals farm system is settiing them up to be a force very soon

This year alone, the Cardinals have graduated JJ Wetherholt, Jimmy Crooks, Nathan Church, Max Rajcic, Blaze Jordan, Luis Gastelum, and Bryan Torres from their farm system, while prospects like Leo Bernal, Joshua Baez, Quinn Mathews, Cade Winquest, Brycen Mautz, and Cooper Hjerpe have made their Major League debuts and look to be big pieces of their team moving forward.

Below them, Rainiel Rodriguez is coming, who may be the best prospect the Cardinals have had since Albert Pujols and should rank in the top five prospects in baseball when lists update this offseason. Jesus Baez has had a major breakout season and looks like a top-100 prospect now after hitting his 40th home run of the year, and he's joined by upside players like Josiah Ragsdale, Alexander Frias, and Trevor Condon.

I haven't even mentioned the likes of Tai Peete, Yairo Padilla, Won-Bin Cho, Emmanuel Luna, Rocco Maniscalco, Sebastian Dos Santos, Deniel Ortiz, Miguel Hernandez, Jack Gurevitch, and so many other position players who have legit upside in the system. Oh, and don't forget Baez, Bernal, and Wetherholt!

On the pitching side of things, Liam Doyle, Tanner Franklin, and Brandon Clarke headline the system and are three of the most exciting pitching prospects in the game. Doyle and Clarke are joined from the left side by Mathews, Hjerpe, Mautz, Mason Molina, Ixan Henderson, Braden Davis, and Sandro Santana. From the right side, names like Yhoiker Fajardo, Jurrangelo Cijintje, Tekoah Roby, Tegan Kuhns, and Jacob Odle are highlights of the bunch, but again, there are so many more names.

It's truly a loaded farm system right now, and while a variety of these names will not pan out, the Cardinals have so much talent now that it's hard to imagine a world where it doesn't pan out into a really good team moving forward, assuming they continue to nail things as they have so far. Many of these names are going to be leading the Cardinals into their next contention window, and others will be moved in trades to acquire more talent from outside the organization.

We've been telling you that for a while, and honestly, so have the national outlets. It's just nice to see the Cardinals continue to get their flowers for the work they've done rebuilding the pipeline.
