The St. Louis Cardinals' final home game of the 2026 season marked the third straight season of attendance decline, something that they are not proud of and know needs to shift in the years ahead. But if you dig into the numbers, this year's decline points to an interesting reality that the fanbase finds itself in.

I'd call it cautious optimism.

After seeing their attendance decline by about 400,000 fans in 2024 and another 600,000 fans in 2025, the Cardinals sold just 16,105 fewer tickets in 2026 compared to the previous season. That's a very, very small decline compared to how they were hemorrhaging ticket sales before.

My guess is as good as yours for what that number truly means, but I really do think the fact that tickets did not plummet once again is a good sign for the Cardinals organization regarding the positive momentum they are building, but it's also a message that fans will not come back in bunches until they see more to believe in.

The Cardinals attendance moving forward will rise or plumet further based on actions by front office and ownership

Prior to 2024, the Cardinals had 18 straight seasons of 3 million+ fans coming to Busch Stadium (outside of the 2020-2021 COVID-impacted seasons), so seeing Busch Staidum the way it has been the last few seasons has been heartbreaking.

While the DeWitt family has not always seemed to believe fans would check out, they've sure heard those concerned loud and clear at this point. In 2024, Bill DeWitt III literally laughed at the thought that Cardinals fans would think that not showing up to Busch Stadium would help their cause.

But following the 2025 season, DeWitt III changed that tuned, saying "the message was received."

2026 was a fun rebuild year for the Cardinals. They played a lot of competitive baseball this year, handed out their first big extension in quite some time to star rookie JJ Wetherholt, saw Jordan Walker revive his career and win the Home Run Derby, and experienced massive gains throughout the farm system.

And who could forget Tarps Off?

These things have instilled hope in the Cardinals fan base this year, real hope, but they know that hope doesn't win a World Series. Backing up that hope with results on the field does. And so while fans may have slowed their roll away from Busch Stadium, they won't accelerate their return either until they see those results on the field with a team they truly believe in.

That team may be here as soon as 2027, but the front office and ownership can increase fan buy-in by seeing their payroll rise even before they see fans return to the stands. I'm not saying they need to go on a huge spending spree, but a real solution for third base, some bullpen help, a front-line starter, and/or center field competition through free agency or trade could compel fans to buy in quicker.

We'll see how this winter goes and if we even have baseball. But if we do, the Cardinals really do need to position themselves to excite fans again.
