Cardinals Trade Partner: Detroit Tigers

Entering 2022, the Tigers were a dark horse team to make the playoffs after a splashy offseason boosted a farm system graduating many top prospect. Now, though, Detroit’s story looks like a tale of caution for St. Louis fans, as their reliance on top prospects is not paying off at the moment.

While the Tigers are still looking to build around that young core for years to come, they are open to retooling their roster, making 25-year-old Tarik Skubal available on the market. Skubal has not been dominant by any means, but his 3.67 ERA and 113 whiffs in 112.2 innings of work would be a welcomed addition to the Cardinals rotation.

Skubal is especially appealing, as he is controllable through the 2026 season, meaning St. Louis has potentially five playoff runs in their pocket with the young left-hander. When giving up a young hitter like Gorman, it feels a lot better knowing you will be able to have the piece you are acquiring for many years, which would be the case for St. Louis here.

Skubal may be less of an immediate upgrade than others on this list, but he does provide immense long-term value. For the Tigers, adding Gorman would give the club another high-level prospect to pair with the likes of Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson.
